Chris Matthews and the DNC-NBC panel touched on this last night, but doesn't this really feel like the John McCain convention, instead of the GOP convention? Not that it's a bad thing, as I really think the presidential campaign is about the people running more than their party, but it is a contrast to the tones of past conventions. As the NBC folks were saying last night, the whole focus was on re-introducing John McCain. Reminding everyone why so many people like the guy as a person so darn much. Reminding everyone -- and particularly the Dems/independents out there -- that John McCain has been a symbol for a long time of the possibility that a politican can move beyond the party and make real, lasting change. Basically, it was a "we know Obama is a magnetic personality. Guess what, John McCain is that guy, too." I thought it was very effective. I think the GOP realized that a lot of Dems/independents might tune in last night and hoped to present them with just enough that they liked in order to get them to come back tonight. It worked quite well. I fully expect tonight, however, that it will turn into the Republican Convention. Which Republican party they appeal to will be the real question.

That crap was boring as heck. It was, in essence, a John McCain roast. Blah, blah, blah....bunch of old, white guys talking to an exclusive, non-diverse crowd. Same old story Repubs.....just one of the many reasons he lives up to the McSame moniker. Whatever. Take your pipe and your patched tweed coat down to the sidewalk cafe and have yourself a latte' while you ponder the deep truths of the world, you Berkeley-minded bozo. Avoid personal insults. --Admin

I bet you're voting for Obama because he's young, or he's black, or some other superficial reason. At least most people on this board have something meaningful to contribute. You should go back to the kiddie table.

Tony:
I know I must be wrong, but some of your comments about the GOP sound downright bigoted and racially insensitive.
I know that can't be as those on the Left all have pure hearts and love all mankind.

Scandal! How dare he, um, own a parking lot?.....uhhh, yeah. That's the ticket. What is the point behind this? Please elaborate. You Tube & online video....a 21st century substitute for thought. Here's a thought for you then...Why don't you take a look at all of the vids on the site instead of pointing out one and tell me what you think. Perhaps we could talk about McCain's assinine remarks about Gen. Petreaus, or McCain's stance on the GI Bill? Maybe we could discuss his refusal to stand by his comment that he still needs to be educated on economics?. As a matter of fact, he flat out denied he said that - and of course the quote was later found. Mind you, he's portraying himself as an expert - more bull doodoo! bravenewfilms.org/blog/39179-mccain-s-youtube-problem-just-became-a-nightmarePoint is, son, I'm still waiting for McSame to talk about some issues rather than butcher everything that comes out of his mouth. How's that for a thought? I'm excited to hear McCain's speech accepting the nomination too, but really, is it that hard to wait for Thursday?

And you draw that conclusion about diversity based upon appearance? Do all white folks think and vote alike? Do all black folks think and vote alike? Do all women think and vote alike?
Very dangerous to conclude one's thoughts from one's appearance. One could say racist or sexist.
I drew no conclusions about the folks at the DNC freak show based upon their appearances.

Sorry, dad, I don't feed trolls.
If Bando or C2C or Saxa wants to discuss those issues, I'm happy to. You can take your clever little "McSame" epithets back to Daily Kos.

Tony:
How many white men is too many? What constitutes an "exorbitant number of white men"?
Must be my bad, but I don't assess people by their color. I guess you do.

You should go back to the kiddie table. Wow...amazing what politics will bring out. Kiddie table, huh? Nevermind who I'm voting for - the real question is why are you conservatives getting so bent out of shape bc I said your convention was boring last night? It was! Are you mad bc I said there were a bunch of old white guys there? There were! Perhaps it was the comment about the crowd being non-diverse? It was! I want to see people talk about issues not hear about McSame's stay in the Hanoi Hilton. When you would like to talk about that KC - get back at me! tonydealsoutmoregarbage: Using your line of thinking, it sure would be easy to criticize the DNC for giving us four days of fluff and the incessant hype of "change." Not much meat and potatoes there pal. Obama certainly didn't get up there and talk about his great inspirations -- a self proclaimed Marxist and a slef proclaimed anti-American, anti-semitic Racist. Instead he gave pie-in-the-sky fluff, while continually trying to protray John McCain as a GWB clone. Obama didn't explain anything about how he proposed to protect the Country while continuing to confront terrorism. Oh he said, "we'll be safer" ... and similar feel good nonsense, but no plan. It's easy to say "bring the troops home," but means nothing without an ongoing plan of action. So I guess all you are saying is that the Republicans have, in the first couple of days, done just what the Democrats did for their entire convention.

Moving back to intelligent (well, relatively, anyway) conversation after a brief stop at the "Click to Ignore" button....
The GOP has a clever, not-so-subtle message they are sending tonight.
(well, you can judge "clever" for yourself; the "not-so-subtle" part is pretty clear - it's subtle as a sledgehammer):
Gov. Michael Steele Gov. Mitt Romney Gov. Mike Huckabee Mayor Rudy Giuliani Gov. Linda Lingell
All leading up to Sarah Palin, of course.
Gee, I wonder what the theme of those earlier speeches will be? ;D

It was what it was - non diverse! My comment was not about voting, black or white - it was about how boring your convention was. It's not about race but if you want to be appeased then so be it.... The GOP convention was *sscheeks compared to the DNC bc the OLD guys bored me to tears! Happy? Yeah, Denver was rocking with Mark Warner, Al Gore and John Kerry.

Apparently St. Paul had too many white men to suit Tony.

I actually think Fred Thompson is giving a helluva speech. This is the most charisma I've seen from the man since Die Hard 2. Best FT lines ever are from Red October: "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it." "Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan." Admin told me. Summer of his third year, he and his squad went down in a chopper accident in the Med. Bad - pilot, crew killed. That kid spent ten months in traction, another year learning to walk again. Did his fourth year from the hospital. Now it's up to you, guys, but you might consider cuttin' hifi a little slack. And the best line from the movie is "Andrei, you've lost another submarine?"

Best Fred Thompson stuff is the "Japanese Inspection" speech from Days of Thunder.
Excellent.
