Also, Dr. Michael DeBakey, noted heart surgeon, died last night at the age of 99. A fascinating story in medical history--he performed over 60,000 heart procedures in his career--that's about two a day, every day, dating back to 1933. That's not all. In addition to the concepts of the artificial heart which he was active in, DeBakey he invented a key part of what became the heart-lung pump...at the age of 23. At 35, while in the Army he helped devlop the concept of the mobile army surgical hospital (MASH). By his 50's, he pioneered angioplasty, and the procedure known as aortic dissection was actually used to treat him in his 90's. The Associated Press once quoted DeBakey as saying when he graduated from medical school, he wasn't sure which kind of doctor he wanted to be. For millions of doctors and patients since, they owe a lot to him.

Tidbits on Tony Snow.
1. Bob Beckel, Democratic commentator, described an occasion where he and Tony were traveling together and Beckel got too much to drink. Beckel was to give a speech but had not prepared it so Tony wrote Beckel's speech, hitting all the liberal points he knew Beckel would make, and Beckel delivered the speech. This was related yesterday by Beckel.
2. Tony was one white man who could run and dunk a basketball.
3. According to Juan Williams, Tony and Juan both attended Davidson.
4. Tony was a convert to Catholicism and a service will be held at Catholic U.

I tuned into some of the tributes yesterday on Fox & they were really moving (Brett Baer in particular - who Snow reached out to when Baer's son was ill).
It's hard not to be inspired by the life that Tony Snow led. As Chris Wallace (I think) noted: was there anything the man couldn't do?

Tidbits on Tony Snow. 2. Tony was one white man who could run and dunk a basketball. Me too. Okay, so it was only a volleyball, but I am 5'11" and could is the operative word in that statement for me. Those days are long gone.

In a homily, the Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, president of Catholic University, told the mourners: "The measure of this man's life can be found in his character, in his optimism, in his joy and humor, in his courage, in his passion for what was good and right, and in his love for God and family and neighbor and country. Tony Snow did not need a long life for us to measure. It was, rather, we who needed his life to be longer." www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/17/AR2008071700118.html?hpid=artslot
