actually, Davidson's really getting in on the recruiting trail. whether they get kelly or not remains to be seen. But they are listed with some very good kids. For example, they are one of five on the list of Tyler Haws, a 6-6 shooting guard from Utah who's on a lot of top 100 lists. That run they made to the final eight is really making inroads

Well, both GU and Davidson are on Ryan Kelly's list. I know they are SF, but do you think that is a realistic inclusion? I just can't see a kid of Kelly's talent, potential and ranking going to Davidson with so many other options available. True, but I'm superstitious about writing any program off.

Haws and Kelly are at completely different levels. No one is saying Davidson can't get top 100 players. But can that program get top 20 guys? If Kelly wants to stay in Carolina he could always go to Duke or UNC instead.

But Kelly is a 5 Star Recruit. Those kids don't end up at Davidson. Could Davidson snag the occasional recruit who made someone's top 100 list? Perhaps. Let me just say, I would have to see confirmation of a top 25, top 50 recruit enrolling at Davidson before I believe it.

true, they are at different levels. but my point is that davidson is sort of working to shed that mid-major thing, and guys are starting to take notice

Anthony Perry is his cousin, so I wonder what he's telling him about us.

I would love to see us get Kelly, if only to shatter the perception that we aren't interested in top white players. But he apparently already has offers from most of the ACC, including Carolina and State. He's supposedly a top student and his dad went to Yale, so maybe there's an academic angle to pursue.

Anthony Perry is his cousin, so I wonder what he's telling him about us. Perry might suggest that if for some odd reason Cheek didn't live up to the hype... the Hoyas would still stick by him and he'd have a chance at starting all four years. Perry certainly had that chance.

I could see Davidson being the Gonzaga of the east. Gonzaga used a couple Cinderella runs to become a legit national power and a big player on the recruiting scene. I think Davidson might be able to do the same thing.
Davidson's biggest drawback is their conference. I think they'll have a few kids who like everything about the school and the program, but decide not to go because they don't want to spend the majority of their season playing cupcakes.

Gonzaga's conference is the same way, but they just go out and play great non-league schedules every year. That's what keeps them getting big time recruits. 10 years ago, there was no way they could walk into Chicago and come out with a stud like Jeremy Pargo. Times have changed, because they are a national program now

The WCC is a LOT better than the Southern Conference. Plus, Gonzaga plays a national schedule.
Davidson is somewhere between Mason (good conference, one time run) and Gonzaga (good conference, consistent success).

the WCC has gotten better over the course of time. But when the two schools were at comparable stages, so were the conferences.

Of course Gonzaga has gotten some top 100 players who ended up being better than the top twenty players in their same class.

Great article. I got a big kick out of this line: While Bruce Pearl -- who is the only coach to have a photo of himself on the front the envelopes -- corresponds frequently, the family is still waiting to see him stand out in a crowd at a gym. You read that line, the stuff about Bobby G at Seton Hall... then you read Cheek's comments about JT3?.... A very different man and approach and one that seems to appeal to Cheek. I'd bet GU has as good a shot as anyone.

Does anyone know for sure about the relationship JT3 might have with Bobby Hurley as a result of his years in NJ at Princeton?

Same goes for Davidson's coach with that what's-his-name ( ) guard. But, we have our own gem-finder. JTIII prepared/turned out-of-top 50 h.s. players Hibbert, Jeff and Pat Jr. into NBA-caliber players.

Its difficult not to get over-hyped. If the chips fall into place with key guys returning, in my mind we we are one very good player from from being a true titile contender again. IMHO, if everyone returns, and we add Riley and Thompson, we will already be a National Title contender. Potential stars on that team include (at least): Monroe Summers Freeman Wright Now, if we add one, or even two more 4 or 5 star recruits? Well then we'd just have to be prepared to hear one thing. "No Fair"! I think that's what we'd be hearing from the rest of the Conference, the ACC, and all the others! Well, UNC will have two great recruiting classes to match the "not fair" billing. The difference makers would be coaching and strength of schedule. Advantages GU.
