Where does G38 come from? (outside of his jersey number obviously) Is Schilling really nicknamed after a gun?
What a good Republican!

His handle on Sons of Sam Horn is Gehrig38. His son is named Gehrig, he is a big baseball history guy, and he does lots of charity work for ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease).

Damn, it was too good to be true.
Just kidding. Thanks, Jack. As much as I would've enjoyed it if he nicknamed himself after a Glock, I think it's fair to say the truth is much more noble.

Too bad he's most likely done. Good pitcher. This gives him more time to say dumb things on radio and in print. Good times. Cue the exploratory committee for public office.
Here's a serious question: Is he a Hall of Famer?

That's not a serious question. He's not even close.

P.S. Career averages of 14-9 with a 3.46 ERA, primarily in the National League will not justify even a 50% vote.
Give him his due in the post-season, but he is no Hall of Famer.

Here's a serious question: Is he a Hall of Famer? Despite his lack of career credentials, I think he makes it. For a shorter period of time, he was a dominant pitchers, and he has fantastic post-season credentials. It may be through a veteran's committee type thing, though. I think in five years, the BBWAA will still be stuck on Wins and Losses, a horribly archaic metric.

Early polling by Nick Cafardo shows about a 50/50 split among a small sample of HOF voters, with the yeas pointing to post season success and the nays pointing to the ridiculous W totals. In the end, I imagine he ends up in the same category as Jack Morris, which is to say close, but not quite at that 75% threshold until perhaps the very end of his 15 year window.
For comparison, his career ERA+, which compares his ERA to that of other pitchers of the same time period, is tied for 42 all time, as good as Bob Gibson and Tom Seaver and slightly better than Juan Marichal, and Bob Feller, among others. Of the pitchers ahead of him and not in the HOF, almost all are either not yet HOF eligible or relievers. Dan Quisenberry has the highest ERA+ not in the HOF.
