I think the numbers (more than just the overall vote totals) out of West Virginia prove this is going to be a factor in the general election.

Stuff like this drives me nuts.
Look. I loathe Hillary. With a passion.
But check the comments in the realnews site. If you're a Hillary supporter in WV, the article paints you as a racist.
Obama was a law professor and served in the state senate before getting elected to the US Senate. A large portion of his term has been devoted to running for president. He has a remarkably liberal voting record. And he doesn't say much in his speeches.
All of these are perfectly legitimate reasons not to vote for him.
Will some people not vote for Obama because he's black, or Hillary because she's a woman? Yup. Are they the majority? I don't think so (though I'd doubt any racists would answer truthfully to a "will you not vote for Barack Obama because he's white" question).
I want it out on the table now that McCain may win the general election (though the Mississippi election results may suggest otherwise) because he may run the better campaign. If Obama or Hillary loses, it may be because they're not the best candidate, not because of their race or gender.

I don't think they're painting anyone as racist - there's a woman in the ad who says "I'm not voting for him because he's black." It doesn't get much clearer than that. The article in the Washington Post is also pretty clear. The person who said "Hang that dark from a tree" also probably wasn't too concerned about Obama's record in the Senate.

The article in the Washington Post is also pretty clear. The person who said "Hang that dark from a tree" also probably wasn't too concerned about Obama's record in the Senate. The headline is "Obama faces racism in West Virginia Many blue collar Democrats are not ready for a black president" SHARON, CLINTON SUPPORTER (first instance) - No indication of racism TRACY, CLINTON SUPPORTER - Misinformed. Call it racism if you want. DAN - No indication of racism BRENDA - Obama supporter, hates "rednecks" STANLEY - Obama supporter, comments on racism SHARON (second instance) - "Doesn't know" where Obama stands, which almost every political commentator agrees with. Questions Obama's patriotism. CANDICE, CLINTON SUPPORTER - Would vote for McCain due to experience GLADIS, CLINTON SUPPORTER - Wouldn't vote for Obama since she's never "seen or known" him TRACY - "doesn't agree" Obama should be president. Maybe racism, maybe doesn't trust media painting West Virginians as racist hicks. ASHLEY - doesn't think the "black guy" should be there. Probable racism JANET, REPUBLICAN - Will vote for Obama over McCain, both over Hillary for "change". 3 out of 9 (with the three being generous) isn't "many". Like I said, some white people won't vote for Obama. Some blacks will vote for Obama over McCain or Hillary due to his race. Some women will vote for Hillary over Obama due to her gender. I know that determining intent for an explosive issue like this is hard. But the people interviewed raised legit questions about Obama's experience and his tendency to talk big without actually saying anything. Just because they're not wearing overalls and not a suit on the McLaughlin Group doesn't mean that they're hicks.

If Obama or Hillary loses, it may be because they're not the best candidate, not because of their race or gender. Well, some of them are. This is West Virginia we're talking about here. See this video (yes, it's the Daily Show, but the women are from an AP report). I don't think Hillary people in general think this way, but I don't think it's unfair to say such sentiments are part of the explanation on why WV and KY vote like they do. In more racist news, this bartender in Georgia is selling t-shirts with "Obama '08" and a picture of Curious George peeling a banana on them. Houghton-Mifflin is considering a lawsuit. This really needs an Onion-type headline, like "Racist bar owner says 'I'm not a racist, but...'"

I think the numbers (more than just the overall vote totals) out of West Virginia prove this is going to be a factor in the general election. I hardly think generalizing from West Virginia to the entire United States of America is either a. close to logically sound (the same way it would be with any other state, too) and b. are you out of your Editeding gourd? While race may be an issue, let's try to stay away from using West Virginia as the "average" American state, and using their canvassing results as projections on the rest of us sane folk. Wait... Obama is black? On edit: God I love the Daily Show. Miss it so much here in Europe. "he's simply not their kind of guy" "and I.. took it." Nicely placed black guy behind hildog, too. Politics, such a gold mine for humor like this. Anywhere else this stuff would be thought unimaginable. "Yeah, people will see the one lone black guy behind Hildog, and think that, ya know, black people like Hilary." I can only imagine the conversation behind that one. Nothing like insulting the intelligence of the American people...
