Nikita is Steve Novak except that he is a better passer. He will see significant minutes. If Nikita could shoot like Novak and give us that type of play, I would be thrilled.

Novak also has a few inches on Nikita.
That said, if he can hit the three, he can play.

If he just gives us 10 solid minutes (which pretty much brings our rotation back to its customary 7 1/2-man we usually run), I'd be thrilled.
I don't need Novak. Give me Dan Fitzgerald and I'd be happy.

Let's keep this LOVE NIKITA wave going... and while we are at it let's throw Omar some love too... we know we are going to need both of them all season long, and probably at the trickiest of times... Omar played hard when he got a chance... I am on the OMAR-NIKITA love train...

Unless we get some magical transfer, Omar and Nikita are going to get more run than they have in the past and more than we expected a month ago. I had no delusions about competing for a Big East three peat this year, so this should make things even more fun/unpredictable. i guess second guessing will happen regardless, but it almost seemed like people on this board were on high alert all the time because of the expectations created by our Final Four run and returning seniors. Next year will be a lot of fun!

I don't think anyone "isn't giving Nikita any respect." It's more like that up to this point he hasn't played a huge role, so why assume that something unproven is there when there is nothing up to this point that proves otherwise? I don't see why people can't get this through their heads.

um Novak is in The League. Nikita is the second best baller in his family.
I don't want to trash our players - i hope that omar and meschey give us loads of productive minutes...I just think it is waaay premature to expect a Steve Novak -- who once poured in 41 against UConn -- from NM

Rumor had it that language difficulties were holding Nikita back last year. It sounds like he's got the basketball skills, but if he has trouble communicating on the court the skills won't do him any good.
One thing I liked about the article was JTIII's comments at the end. It seems like JTIII is relishing the challenge of next year.

Ouch. Braswell is a big blow for this team. In the back of my mind I really had him becoming a Hoya this upcoming year. I guess the staff isn't the all-knowing first mover that I always thought they were. Now when I say "we're thin up front" it only means by the weight of our players. Needed that big body like his to take on guys like Blair from Pitt. You're right... we don't have that big body there to guard the big bangers down low.... but I'm not sure we did last year either. We know what Blair did to Hibbert.... Ewing was a better perimeter defender than he was in the post... same could be said for Mack. We remember what Psyco T did to us two years ago. So nothing new on the hilltop. Hopefully, Sims and Monroe will D up.

i kinda like this.
JTIII seems up for the challenge, and it is a big challenge.
and we don't know what we are getting with our Freshman. so for some to pencil in guys and what they can do at the collegiate level, more power to you.
right now, we got one legit and proven big guy in Summers and he is really a 3. Monroe seems more like a tweener of 3 & 4.
Sims (at 215?) is our only guy that can mix it up?
maybe we will se more of JT3's offense than ever, without really having a low-post presence.
after reading that article about Braswell and his struggles, I had serious doubts he would be here next year. not really a big shock there. i wish the young man well.
Losing Vernon is a big loss for this team next year.

I am nothing but excited about the guys on the roster this upcoming year.

Thing is, where's strummer at when you need him to go on a rant about how Braswell isn't holding up his end of his commitment to the University? Would at least liven things up a bit...

Nikita can play a little.. But Omar? I'm sorry, but if he's needed in Big East Games..we're in trouble. You might be pleasantly surprised. He's a nice shooter with size (6'5"). I think his weakness is on the defensive side. Let's see how he does in Kenner.

has there been any word on whether nikita was officially given a red-shirt for last year? i know we all assumed so, but was just curious if there's been confirmation...

I put this scenario under "extremely rare." We'll rotate Summers, Monroe, and Sims down low. Hard for me to believe we'll rotate Freeman down to the 4. We could see Sapp at the three on occasion to run three guards or we could see Summers, Monroe, and Sims in all at once. But Wright, Clark, Sapp, Freeman and a big? I don't know why we'd do that unless we had a strategic advantage or an injury. I still consider Freeman a guard. He's probably 6'3". Plus, most of his game is played on the perimeter. Small Forwards can play equally inside and outside (even if they don't do it). Small Forwards can usually also rebound. You can't do that at 6-3 when you are matched up with a 6-7 to 6-9 small forward. Although I do think he will play a lot of 3 guard because Clark will be too good to sit on the bench.

I was on GUHoyas and got pretty excited about a 4-guard lineup with 210-pound Austin Freeman potentially being able to guard some one a lot taller than him due to a relatively small weight disparity. Then I saw that that Nikita was listed as 241 pounds and realized that there are lies, damned lies, and the weights listed on GUHoyas.

Doesn't that usually come with playing inside and outside? ;D But yes, I wanted to mention that just because he isn't a small forward doesn't mean he can't play the 3. There's no problem having the 3 a guard.

Nikita did add on 17 pounds of muscle from what I've been told and is looking to put on even more. But 241? Very doubtful.

Small Forwards can usually also rebound. You can't do that at 6-3 when you are matched up with a 6-7 to 6-9 small forward. Rebounding is 20% height, 80% heart. Over the last few years, we have had frontcourt lineups that have been as tall as any other school in the country, yet we've been no better than an average rebounding team. I think we can put to rest any notion that a person can't compete for rebounds merely because he lacks ideal height. Perry McDonald would certainly agree.
