Looks like they are going to try throwing wads of billionaire oilman cash at him: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney08/news/story?id=3334472I hope Self doesn't leave Kansas. There aren't many programs left that are stronger than ours right now. I get nervous when the coaching gig opens up at one of them.

Thought T. Boone was more of a corporate raider type? You're both right. He was employed by the oil bidness and raided other oil and gas corporations.

Self is an alumnus of OSU, but he's smart enough to know that the Kansas job is one of four or five truly great college coaching positions.
Second choice? Look to Billy Gillispie, in an emerging no-win situation at Kentucky.

I understand tradition dating back to Naismith, and the results are obvious, but how have they continued to be so good? There is not an obvious recruiting base locally, they are not in a major media market, their conference is very good but not the ESPN darling that the ACC is, and they don't have warm weather. How is it that Kansas has been so consistently excellent (title drought nothwithstanding) while programs like Indiana and Kentucky, which share most of the same characteristics, have had their ups and downs recently? None of that is to say OSU is a more attractive option for a coach. My impression of Stillwater is that it makes Lawrence look like Athens. I just don't really understand what about Kansas is so appealing to these kids from Chicago, New York, Florida, Alaska, or Texas.

Admittedly, you're perfectly positioned to succeed, and you're the BMOC, but people start saying that they're disappointed if you "only" make the Sweet 16 three straight years. OSU under Pickens may be worse - you have Pickens' great expectations, but OSU doesn't have the tradition that Kansas has. Kentucky is a great job, if you win the national championship every year, do it with only Kentucky kids, don't let your opponent score, average around 100 points a game, are able to clone yourself to make every Rotary Club event, and have a fun coaches' show.

Kansas is in a historically weak conference for basketball relative to other major conferences. And it's a basketball-first school that still gets major football money and is a big state university. What Nebraska spends on football, Kansas can spend on basketball. If you play basketball for Kansas, you are a BMOC. If you're a starter, you're a legend. If you're good, you're a god.
