GUGS is handling this pretty well. They got public opinion with them (by a lot) but they're playing it safe and going though all the "sensitivity training" motions.
Hell this might be good for them, there is no such thing as bad publicity. They'll probably make triple than what they expected

"Poor poor girl. I bet she has some horrible stories about being repressed when she goes back to her prep school reunion, or at her summer house on the jersey shore. "
The author's from a public school in Mississippi, jackass. Way to prove that Georgetown people don't prejudge.

What's more, she's probably right. I'm a straight white guy and have no idea what it's like to not be.
Still, I don't think the shirts are offensive. Maybe that's hypocritical.

Paul Krugman's op-ed in the Times today is titled "Grains Gone Wild"
Apparently he is sexist too...

so glad i attended georgetown before its students jumped the shark and turned into PCU-level d-bags. Actually I am sure that these tools who would protest a funny and unoffensive slogan were there when I attended, I just chose to avoid them since I went to college to have FUN. a- Editeding-men. the school has gotten so lame.

Poll on the Hoya webpage about the shirt being offensive are at 65% think it's not offensive, while 23% do, and 12% are staying out of it. 304 respondents.
Also, I don't understand your post kc...
I'm proposing for the next t-shirts: Quit bitching, Have a burger. Of course, they'll probably protest that bitching is a reference to a derogatory term for women...etc. etc.

Hey KC- just under 50% of GU students went to public HS and another 20% went to Catholic HS. Now some of those public high schools are the likes of New Trier and many of the Catholic high schools (particularly the Jesuit ones) are great schools too, but roughly half of GU students overall are on need-based financial aid, so let's save the privileged preppy stereotyping for our rivals, ok?

Several people at Tombs last night were wearing the t-shirts. I was surprised to see this because my understanding was that GUGS was not going to release the shirts at all (though I suppose these could have been counterfeits not obtained from GUGS). Did I miss something?

Just wondering, have these students ever heard a joke before? Most jokes are crude, cruel and degrading. They often "cross the line." That is why we sickos laugh at them. Well, I don't know about crude and degrading, but this is certainly right about cruel, at least according to Freud. All humor is tendential to a certain degree; that is, it is directed at an object and it puts the object of the joke at a disadvantage of some sort. In other words, every joke in the history of the world can be construed as offensive to some individual or group. (Freud excepts puns from this rule, but I disagree A. because puns are not funny, therefore do not constitute humor; and B. because puns are tendential to proper use of language, and therefore could be considered offensive by some nerdy linguist somewhere). Humor at its best objectifies everyone and everything. Somewhere along the line, we decided that it was more important to be sensitive to everyone and everything. I take the opposite view -- make all jokes fair game, and make fun of everyone all the time. If it were me, and I was offended by the GUGS t-shirt, hell, don't protest it. Make your own shirt, one that says, "You don't have enough meat to satisfy us." or "Yes, they're Grade A; Yes, they're Size D; No, you can't have any." (Well, actually, those kind of suck, but something like that). Thicker skins all around, I say. Fight jokes with jokes, not with whining.

So now, there really is absolutely NO difference b/t these and the Save Second Base shirts. This better shut up all the obnoxious conflictmongers on campus.

This, from a school that had massive protests and outcry at the beginning of the year over rules restricting beer pong??? Say what you will about the manner and method of conveying the message (and there is plenty to say), but the original comment and criticism on the shirt's content and subtext is absolutely valid assuming the proceeds were not originally going to charity. Lizzie--any idea on whether that was that the plan all along or is that a new thing designed to diffuse some of the criticism?

I think there is a little thing in this country called freedom to objectify women. We do it in every movie, magazine, and to a lesser extent radio (you can't see them but they still get objectified) If a man can't go up to a feminist and say, "Hey baby I'd agree more with your argument if you were topless" then the terrorist win.
Hey GUGS, stop going to sensitivity training. That is for women. Men don't have sensitivity. We don't get all emotional after watching Oprah. I would come up with new t-shirts that say "GUGS: We got your meat right here....in our pants!"

We're not going to protest. We're not going to protest. Gutter is a tool. We're not going to protest.

It was to diffuse some of the criticism I hate to be a grammar tool, but it's "defuse". Diffuse is an adjective and means spread out. Defuse is a verb and means to make less harmful.

So you don't think there is any bit of over-sensitivity going on? Not a wee bit of overzealous PC-mongering?
