Dawn basically called Jessica Valenti a dirty pregnant slut on her blog once, so she's not exactly the queen of non-offensive remarks here. If you actually had read the link you would have seen it was written as a guest post by a GU student.

Does anyone know if the Pope criticized Georgetown (implicitly or explicitly) while speaking at Catholic University? The only thing they said about the speech on the news was that he spoke for 30 minutes instead of the expected hour.

If he cut half his remarks, I really hope his criticisms of Universities hit the cutting room floor.

This is my favorite part:
In regard to faculty members at Catholic colleges universities, I wish to reaffirm the great value of academic freedom. In virtue of this freedom you are called to search for the truth wherever careful analysis of evidence leads you. Yet it is also the case that any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university’s identity and mission; a mission at the heart of the Church’s munus docendi and not somehow autonomous or independent of it.
In other words, you have the freedom to agree with the teachings of the Church. How Orwellian.

I perused this thread and don't remember seeing the word Jesuit once. I always thought Georgetown was a Jesuit instituion before a Catholic institution... if that makes sense. Therefore, the administration has a great deal of lattitude in running the school. Jesuits haven't agreed with all of the Vatican's views, members of the Georgetown community aren't expected to either.

Seems to me that a lot of the spin attached to the Pope's visit was reconciliation (the Pontiff's meeting with and apology to clergy-abused victims) and celebration of the Catholic Church's role in American life. Public reports of a stick taken to Catholic academics were not prominent.
