ESPN clearly wanted Duke and UNC as high i the rankings as possible to hype (even more than they already do) this Wednesday's "Rivalry Week" showcase game.

No question Mich State played poorly against Penn State. But just because you play bad in one game doesn't mean you are a bad team. I personally think they are very good. Why is it pumping if i think they are good? GUjook97 thinks they are the worst top 10 team of alltime. That doesn't sound like a pump either. He has his opinion and i have mine. Sleepy - totally think they are a solid team and would likely be a bad match-up for us as you said. Thought you were implying that they should be ranked higher than us since this is a ranking thread. We probably agree on Michigan State -- I always think they are good and Izzo is one of my favorite coaches -- but this year they have one big win and a couple of head-scratcher losses.

We lost to Old Dominion at home on campus and still made it to the final four. What's your point? Way to confuse things genius - we're talking about the polls, not the Final Four. A loss to ODU in the course of a 40 game schedule is a lot different that two stink bomb losses in just 22 games. The point is a lot of people don't think they're a top 10 team.

ah yes rivalry weak featuring such classic rivalries like georgetown louisville. any way. Mich st. sucks and is overrated. Yeah we lost to Old Dominion last year, but they were a tournament team. Penn st isn't, iowa isn't. The big 10 is a joke.

Thanks for the lesson in "Rounding 101" HoyaChris, or is that "Rounding 100".

In the "I have too much time on my hands" department, Pomeroy's model has the Big East going 73-69 in remaining conference games - who's says stats don't lie? From kenpom.com: "**Projected record is based on chances of winning, and therefore may not conform to the cumulative game-by-game predictions."

SFHoya99, actually we're basically saying the same thing. I don't think they should be ranked ahead of us. No chance with losses to Iowa and Penn State. My bad in bringing this up in a thread concerning rankings and polls. My point was i thought they were a very good team and actually a bad matchup for us. I actually do think they deserve to be a top 10 team right now. Look at the teams behind them and i don't see anybody who i would say is definitely better.

Thanks for the lesson in "Rounding 101" HoyaChris, or is that "Rounding 100". While you clearly got AP credit to get out of Rounding 101, this board is often overrun with users who did well in Misconstruing Pomeroy 266.

Based on the ESPN / USA Today Poll, 15 of the pre-season Top 25 are still in the Top 25, with Louisville and Oregon being the most notable disappointments and Wisconsin, Duke, Stanford and Butler being the biggest surprises thus far.
From a conference perspective, the Pac10 has lost the most favor with the coaches - dropping from 6 of the Top 25 down to just 3. The Big East seems to be living up to expectations with a steady 5 teams in the Top 25 (UConn and ND have taken Louisville and Nova's pre-season spots).
Pre- Season Today Big East 5 5 ACC 3 2 Big 10 2 3 Big 12 3 4 SEC 3 3 Pac 10 6 3 CUSA 1 1 Other 2 4 Total 25 25
EDIT - Sorry about the formatting, I haven't figured out how to create a table in this forum.

Touche HoyaChris, not trying to misconstrue, merely pointing out an amusing anomoly, I am a huge fan of Pomeroy's work.

It's not your bad -- I should have read it better. Re: Stanford, man I was completely wrong on that team. I thought their mediocre guardplay would hold them back. In general, though, their guards have accepted their roles, mostly because Robin and Brook have just become monsters defensively and pretty darn good offensively. They are still too erratic for my tastes, but as long as the O runs through Hill and Brook, they will be much improved on last year.

SFHoya, definitely my bad since others viewed it the same way as you did. Something got lost in translation, not too uncommon on a message board. Anyways, i agree with you about Stanford. Their guard play is suspect but the Lopez boys are tough. That would be another interesting matchup for us since it would most likely be a grind it out half court game. That's the type of game where Chris Wright would be a big help. Hopefully Chris makes a comeback before the Big East tourney because he really could be the X factor for us.

AP finally out, Hoyas #6 still, I think this poll is a bit better than the coaches aka: no florida, Kansas above UCLA, etc.

I'm just happy Duke or UNC is guaranteed a loss this week. I, however, am not happy about the fact that Dickie V is coming back on the air for that game. if you are in the dc area i am sure the espn version will be blacked out...get to listen to packer on the regional feed

Well, it was just my opinion, but MSU is way overrated. Any team that has losses to Penn State and Iowa has no business being in the top 10. That's why I made the Purdue comparsion. Purdue is 8-1 in the Big Ten, and they have losses to Clemson, Missouri and Wofford. That says about all you need to know about the Big Ten.
