I hadn't seen this posted anywhere before. Sorry if it's clutter. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/seth_davis/01/15/hoop.thoughts/1.htmlBill Mettee of Gaitherburg, Md., wants to know: "Is Georgetown's rebounding problem just a matter of the players needing to get after it more, or is there a bigger problem with the way they are 'schemed' by the coaches? I am concerned when they are out rebounded by Rutgers and American, but have a ton of height and athleticism." It is a little surprising to see the Hoyas ranked 10th in the Big East in rebounding margin (+3.1), but there may be a pretty good explanation for that: They never miss! They're ranked first in the league in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage (not to mention in both field goal and three-point percentage defense). They're also fifth in the nation in offensive efficiency. Here's my favorite stat of all: Georgetown has 252 assists on 408 made field goals. That was 82 more assists than their opponents. The larger problem for the Hoyas is their three-point shooting is suspect once they hit the road. In their two losses at Memphis and Pitt, the Hoyas shot a combined 6 for 34 from behind the arc. It's not just the low percentage that bothers me, it's the high number of attempts. As I've said before, the biggest difference between playing at home and on the road is that at home, you can fire up threes, but on the road you've got to take it to the cup. It was also disconcerting to see Pitt's guards slice their way to the basket so often with relative ease. I still believe the Hoyas are a national championship-caliber team, but for most of the season I've considered them solidly on the first tier. After watching them struggle to beat UConn and then lose at Pitt, I'm officially relegating them to the top of the second tier.

And Davis also falls into the trap of thinking that shooting a high percentage is bad for rebounding margin. I don't get why that confuses people.

i dont think he was differentiating between offensive and defensive. though i will be accused of being negative, his last paragraph sums up my thot exactly which is very depressing. what will i do with my plane tix to san antonio? there is still time to develop weapons and as long as we stay hot from behind the arc we will be tough to beat.

I did a study on the Hoyas two years ago -- exactly the same shooting percentage at home as on the road in BE play.
Seth gives no logic for his home/road change in stratgey.

Seth gives no logic for his home/road change in stratgey. He'd watched the Pitt game the previous night? That usually passes for "logic". Lots of shortcuts when you have to in theory follow all the good teams in college bball. Also, one tends to resort to platitudes ("I still believe the Hoyas are a national championship caliber team...") and using the question as a jumping off point for several interesting but unrelated topics. The "high number of attempts" vs. Memphis and Pitt (14 and 20)doesn't bother me as much as Seth b/c I know in our two most recent home games we attempted 23 and 23. Long as I still feel we're taking good looks I'm fine with the whole thing, bad nights will happen. Anything's better than the pass-it-around-the-perimeter paralysis of a few years' past.

I'm a bit confused about this quote, too...
"It was also disconcerting to see Pitt's guards slice their way to the basket so often with relative ease."
... Ramon and Benjamin were a combined 5-7 from 2-point range (compared to their 6-12 from three), and at least one of those two-pointers was Benjamin's ridiculous fadeaway from 17' on the baseline.
I think we did a number of things badly on defense (poor D-rebounding and leaving the baseline open would be at the top of my list), but successful "slices to the basket" from Ramon and Benjamin don't ring much of a bell.

Seth is right...Man, Seth really likes Georgetown...he always says very good things about the Hoyas, almost always, and he also tells the truth because this is one of his best I would assume, so why wouldn't put a lot more study into one of his best teams, if not his best, I don't know, but I do know he like the Hoyas. just my opinion...
