This morning Jeremy Foley announced new contracts for basketall and football coaches Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer. The big news might be that essentially signed as the same time, Billy will be making $3.5 million per season while Urban will have to get by on only $3.25 per year.
It's hard for you and I to truly understand and comprehend those kinds of dollars, but what I am pointing out is that I don't think there is another football school in the Country whose basketball coach is paid more than the football coach. Texas and Ohio State are the schools that come to mind as being very good in both sports, but I think Tressel and Brown dramatically outearn their counterparts.
Therefore I am going to officially say that we are a basketball school now. But unlike other opinions, that doesn't preempt being a football school as well.

Florida isn't a football or basketball school, it's just a school with an athletic department more awash in money than most other schools. You do realize that next year FU will be paying Donovan almost nine times what JTIII earned in 05.

If you feel a pressing need to start a thread like this on another school's message board, your school is a football school. Embrace it already, hifi.

Excitable, JTIII is tremendously underpaid. I have been saying that all along just like the rest. I am still kind of surprised that they haven't signed him to a raise and extension yet. Is there any more discussion going on at present?
Austin, how much talk is there about Texas being a basketball school out your way? Obviously they are in a similar situation, being the State school in a state with a wealth of talent and with a strong tradition on the gridiron, but making strides on the hardwood. People here are really into hoops but granted it's a lot easier when you are winning. If we do regress to 18-12 and an NIT trip next season, it will be interesting to see if we still sell out our games and have the same home court advantage that we've gotten used to.

Technically, Florida is a state (or the name of a 70's sitcom character), not a school at all.
Now, the University of Florida, on the other hand, is neither a football school nor a basketball school.
Both of these appellations include the word "school," so I don't see how either one applies. ;D
And yes, in case you were wondering, this is my version, I guess, of holding up the "You're not smart enough to run the Princeton offense" sign, so I guess I'm a jerk just like the Dukies.
(but I included a little grinny smiley face, so all is forgiven - even though I may or may not have been kidding)

Boz, I apologize for the egregious error of omission of seemingly implied details.

Props to Florida. Great basketball and Football programs. Both coaches are deserving of nice contracts as a reward for their national championships. That being said, I think both teams will struggle this year (Tebow is one of most overhyped players in the country along with Percy Harvin) and basketball team will struggle in the SEC this year..

That being said, I think both teams will struggle this year (Tebow is one of most overhyped players in the country along with Percy Harvin) and basketball team will struggle in the SEC this year.. I think the basketball team will struggle for sure, but the talent is there and I would think that a Sweet 16 appearance would be an attainable but realistic goal. Obviously you can't say that if you are a player or a coach, but objectively speaking, at least at this point, I would think that. It will ultimately depend on how much the second year players develop. I think Walter Hodge will do fine at the point. Speights, Mitchell, Powell and Werner were all inconsistent and played sparingly as freshmen, but I still think you have to look to them for the bulk of the production. The new guys will be good most likely, but I don't think you can bank on the first year players and if you do, you will fail more times than not. As for the football team, I think we will be very good. The key is that last season no one was expecting much of the defense and it was a strength. I think we will surprise people on defense. I don't expect nearly the drop off that losing 9 starters would typically suggest. On offense we will be flat out sick. Tebow is certainly hyped and whether he is overhyped remains to be seen. But it won't really matter that much. Our skill positions are the most dangerous group I think I've ever seen at the college level. And our offensive line is solid and experienced for the first time in several years. We know Tebow can run and I expect him to develop into at least an adequate passer if he isn't already. I made a friendly wager with RDF last season, and as the fall rolls around I will be glad to do the same with you heartattack, if you are "game."

By the way, Percy Harvin is NOT some overhyped guy. Barring injury, he is going to be a stud for the rest of his Florida career and then on Sunday making a lot of money.

I think if the football coach had just gone through this same ordeal with the NFL instead of Billy D with the NBA (if he had just signed and then gone back on a contract worth almost 30 million), y'all would probably have a higher paid football coach.

I wouldn't argue with you on that one, but in Billy's case it wasn't motivated at all by money. He was slated to receive the exact $3.5 million before hand. I also wouldn't see it happening the same way with Urban. He isn't as deeply rooted in the community. He has only been here for 2 years for one thing. He also is a bit more of a private guy. Billy and Christine are very prominent in the community while the Meyers keep more to themselves. I don't think they would have the same emotional attachments. That being said, I don't expect them to go anywhere anytime soon.

I know it's not about money, but UF has to pay an NBA coach. I mean, he definitely has that kind of reputation at this point.
