If true, can't say I blame Tubby.
If true, Crean is doomed. He would be walking away from a lot of money in a relatively low-pressure, off-the-radar situation. OK, he lands one of the most prestigious jobs in all of coaching. But, the pressure and expectations are going to be way more than he can handle.

Great snag for the Gophers. Tubby will pack 'em in at The Barn.
Agree Crean is toast. UK will regret losing Tubby/gaining the Creepy One.
Who does MU look to now? My guess is an assistant at a major program.

I had a couple beers with a KY alum last night, and I asked if thought Tubby would stay or go. His response was "if he knows what's good for him, he'll leave & spare the program. We don't want our boys in Lexington to just be a Top 32 team." He said it was an embarrassment that Tubby "couldn't win 1 title in 10 years at a school that averages 1 title every 9."
The guy is a friend of mine, but it's sad to hear these comments. I've met Tubby (at a bar in Tennessee years back), and he was fun to talk to----great stories. More importantly, his coaching record is impressive. Not to mention that the college basketball landscape has changed dramatically since Kentucky's last championship. Guys leave early, coaches get chased out, recruits get stolen, and so on.
I like Tubby. Plus, he's a local guy from St. Mary's County, and I work with his niece.

Am I missing something on Crean? For some reason his squads seem to get a lot more hype than they've deserved the last 2 years, IMO. 2 straight first round exits. Other than landing one of the best basketball players to emerge at any level in the last decade or so, I'm not really sure Crean has proved all that much. But maybe I'm missing something.
Katz suggesting that Brey and Mark Few will be considered for the KU vacancy.

Not sure of the validity but I heard Donovan and Billy Gillespie mentioned.... and probably Travis Ford somewhere below Crean in UK interest.

What about John Pelphrey? An alum with a good track record. And his South Alabama team scared Syracuse in the NIT.

Why Minnesota? I gues he really wants spoiled fans off his back because if Minnesota can regularly have seasons over .500 they might as well give him a position for life

I saw this thread title and thought "I didn't even know the Wolves had fired Whittman yet." It honestly never crossed my mind that the Gophers could pull Smith away from Kentuky.
Beyond the obvious 'why the F would you leave Kentuky for Minnesota' question, there is the question of why he would leave a job paying $2.1 mil guaranteed for a job that pays about $1.8 mil.

Also, how is Minnesota paying for all this? Remember this is the same school that is paying Glen Mason & Dan Monson big buyouts and wasn't all that rich to begin with.
Monson's contract wasn't even in the $1.8mil/season ballpark. I think he was comfortably below $1mil/year, right?
Throw in the new football stadium to boot and you're talking some serious cash shortages for the Marroon & Gold

What about Calipari? God knows they'd love to have Bizarro Pitino in Lexington.

In all seriousness, John Pelfrey should be on the short list for sure. He played at Ky. and has been successful as an assistant coach here at UF and now as the head coach at South Alabama. I would think that unless they were to land some giant name, like Pitino returning or something, that they might turn to a younger coach with KY ties.

I can't see them going after a no name coach. The boosters at KY are too crazy to "settle". I love the Gophers hire of Tubby. MN canbe a good basketball school if the admin is trying, and I think that theMonson and Mason firings show they are trying again after settling for mediocrity the last few years

It is "official" now with regard to Tubby to Minn. As far as I can tell, everything else with regard to Kentucky hiring is pure speculation. For what it's worth, our local hack said that he thinks that Kentucky would have two names on the preferred list: Pitino and Donovan but that they aren't getting either one. The next group of candidates are going to include names that have been mentioned here in Creen, Ford and Pelfrey but his gut instinct is that Travis Ford might be announced in a couple of days. I don't know if he has any privileged info, or if it is just a guess.
