Rivalry picks for rivalry week. If it's not a rivalry, I ain't pickin' it:
Northwestern over Illinois in Champaign
Iowa beats Minnesota, Floyd stays in Iowa City
Tennessee over Vandy at Rocky Top
UNC over Duke in Chapel Hill
Purdue over IU in Bloomington
Michigan over Ohio State in the Big House
Utah over BYU in the Holy War
Wazoo over U-Dub in the Apple Cup
Boise State over Idaho in Boise
Auburn over Alabama in the Iron Bowl
S. Carolina over Clemson in Columbia
Stanford over Cal in Palo Alto
The Upsets:
Michigan State shocks Penn State in E. Lansing
Oregon State shocks Oregon in Eugene in the Civil War
Ole Miss shocks LSU in Oxford
UVA squeaks by Va. Tech in Charlottesville (in OT)

Utah over BYU would be an upset this year. I think the Cougs are favored by at least 11 over the Utes and the number was going up last I heard.

Yeah, technically Michigan over Ohio State, Stanford over Cal, and Auburn over Alabama could be considered upset picks, too, but I saved the "upset" label for the contests where one team is nationally ranked and is much more highly regarded than its opponent. After all, are there any real upsets in rivalry games?

Michigan State - Penn State is a rivalry game?
By the way Austin, if you hit that one, you are going to look like the smartest man in the universe. MSU has totally tanked since the blown field goal on the last play of the half resulted in an Ohio State touchdown, and PSU is playing for a spot in a BCS game. Just can't see that one.
Also, since Auburn is a 7 point favorite over Alabama, that would not likely rank as an upset (although I must admit, I found that line to be extraordinary).

Also, since Auburn is a 7 point favorite over Alabama, that would not likely rank as an upset (although I must admit, I found that line to be extraordinary). When Penn State joined the Big Ten, the conference decided they needed an in-conference rival, and that PSU and MSU would play annually on rivalry weekend for the Land Grant Trophy. PSU has dominated the "rivalry" since '93. Most people don't really buy it as a true rivalry, but it's hyped as a rivalry game by the conference, the schools, and the TV stations. I'm picking the Spartans because they're playing to get bowl eligible, save their coach's job, and send the seniors out on a high note in their final home game. MSU under Stanton has put up offensive numbers throughout the 2005 season, they've just gotten burned on D too often. I think a semi-complacent Penn State comes into East Lansing expecting to walk into a BCS bowl, MSU forces a few turnovers with a motivated D, and the Spartan offense scores off those turnovers. I hadn't checked the lines until today, but Vegas has the Nittany Lions as only a 7.5 point favorite, so the bookies don't think it's out of the question either.

Anybody else watching BC-MD?
If so, who are you pulling for?
I've been watching ACC games longer than any other conference in any sport so I'm going to have to pull against the Twerps. The Benedict Arnold status that they have for most longtime Hoya fans on this board doesn't bother me as much as it does most people here probably. That being said, alot of tension against BC this year among fans online for ACC schools from what I've noticed.

UVA squeaks by Va. Tech in Charlottesville (in OT) Oops. Man, if you can't get jacked for the Land Grant Trophy, you ain't got a pulse!! I always consider Ohio State to be Penn State's biggest conference rival because of the whole PA-Ohio thing. The Big 33 Game takes place every year in Hershey, matching the top high school players from PA and Ohio. PA dominated for awhile until the last few years, when ohio started winning every year. I also plain hate the Buckeyes. But their little thing with Michigan kinda makes the whole PSU-OSU thing moot. I know MSU has some offense, but Penn State's defense is absolutely sick. They could have two AAs in Tamba Hali and Paul Posluszny. Note: as this reply was being typed, Michigan State drove the field, and was promptly intercepted deep in Nittany lion territory. Mike Tirico also just said that these are the first two land grant colleges in the country, founded ten days apart in 1855.

Thanks to the Morrill Act.... (had that on an intro engineering test as a question) Congrats. You beat South Carolina. It seemed like a hard fought game. I couldn't see because I think they only aired it on ESPN2 in South Carolina. I had a feeling Clemson would win. Still all and all, a great season for USC.

I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva engineer. A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva engineer. Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear. I'm a ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva engineer.
I think we all figured out today that AustinHoya cannot call upsets, but the Yellow Jackets pulled off a big one. USC and Texas could now conceivably each lose a game but still "Nebraska" their way into the Rose Bowl. Miami fans, I was out tonight and didn't see the game: did Ga. Tech play well or did the 'Canes fail to execute?
Also didn't get a chance to see USC against Fresno State but I hear it was a thriller. Would have loved to see the debates had both Miami-FL and USC lost tonight.

From what I gathered (I didn't see it), but neither team played well in Miami tonight.
However, the USC-Fresno game...as a Penn State fan, knowing that a Trojan loss probably put the Nits in the Rose Bowl (due to the human poll element of the BCS and PSU's great computer ratings)...gave me way too much hope. USC is too good.
Penn State will finish the season one (shadily-timed) second short of an undefeated season and a legitimate claim to playing in Pasadena.

It was back to Granpa Clappy Ball for Miami-inept offense, scared coaching, and poorly prepared team in comparison to Chan Gailey's good job of preparing his team and Defensive Cooridnator John Tenuda's great gameplan. If you watched Clappy and Canes last year--it was more of same--along lines of UM-VTech season ender last year where Miami had chances but played with no clue on offense against a superiorly coached opposing team. GTech's Calvin Johnson is one great player--just a fun kid to watch--even if he did stick it up my team's rear. Tech was not intimidated, they played with heart and toughness and deserved to win the game--they missed 2 FG attempts that would've made final score more lopsided too--weren't hard kicks at all either. Miami wore the "Revolution/Future" jersey and it had me building a time machine to avoid seeing the future Yes they were that ugly. Where's Doc Brown and Michael J Fox when you need them? Tech's defense harrassed Kyle Wright who played worst game he's played at Miami--was awful and played scared in pocket ala Brock Berlin. Should be improving at this time of year, but took a huge step back today. Anyway, good job to Tech and those who support them or dislike Miami--you enjoy this as it was deserved and nothing else I can say. As for a few other things 1. Worst Officiating in College Football took place in Lubbock today--OU got screwed big time--twice in final minutes and it was so bad I'd hope Officials get reprimanded and suspended--their poor efforts cost a team game--twice and remember these are KIDS and youngsters who are effected--not us adults as fans. 2. Lloyd Carr loses to Tressel and OSU--YAWN 3. Brodie Croyle was sacked so much he'll wake up this week looking for grass stains on his PJ's. 4. USC-Fresno was a fun game to watch and good football despite the extremely high score. Guys were making plays and Fresno State and Pat Hill really got after it--but USC deserves credit they find ways to stay focused and win which is heart of a Champion and very tough to do on a game by game basis in any sport, let alone football. 5. Tommy Bowden beats Daddy and then Spurrier back to back--that has to be sweet for him. Just another great weekend of CFB and can't wait for the Home Stretch to settle the Bowl Picture--some great matchups ahead and could be a CLASSIC National Title Game with playmakers the current top two have on their rosters.

After that performance by Reggie Bush, he deserves the Heisman. Every time he touched the ball it seemed like he housed it. He just took it up a notch in the 2nd half. It was ridiculous.

USC is too good. Penn State will finish the season one (shadily-timed) second short of an undefeated season and a legitimate claim to playing in Pasadena. Don't know if PSU would have made it in with a USC loss. The humans like LSU more than PSU (though I think LSU is overrated and can't figure out how a Les Miles team which has not been very impressive in any of its big games this season can be ranked #3), and the margin is substantial enough that PSU's computer ranking wouldn't vault them over the Tigers. Besides, with the whole media/USC/Texas love triangle that has been going on for most of the season now and is quickly getting a bit sickening, even for this UT fan, it's entirely possible the pollsters would have considered USC the best one loss team out there and put them at #2. That's why I said above the debates would have been interesting had both the #1 and #3 teams in the nation lost last night. Personally, I would have put the Trojans in my poll at #3, after Texas and PSU. Congratulations on PSU's Big Ten title, but even if USC and Texas lose one game each, I don't see the Nittany Lions ending up in Pasadena. As far as having a "legitimate" claim to be there, well, there are a lot of one-loss teams out there that would have "legitimate" claims.

Reggie became the "front-runner" after the Notre Dame game, too, but was quickly overtaken by Vince Young. It's as if people don't know Bush has incredible breakaway speed, and are then surprised when he torches poor defenses like Notre Dame's. VY is expected to tear up Texas A&M's poor excuse for a defense next Friday, so we'll see what happens then. Having said that, I happened to be ordering a drink at the bar when Reggie made his first big run up the left side to give the Trojans the lead, and it was simply beautiful. (Objectively speaking, that is. On a personal level it caused me to swear at the television.) By the way, ESPN's updated Heisman poll still has Bush in third place behind Young and Leinart. proxy.espn.go.com/ncf/heisman/index

First of all, I said they were one second away from a legitimate claim, meaning the one second in Ann Arbor that stands between them and an undefeated season. My bad if I wasn't clear. As for vaulting LSU...they don't have to. Penn State is already ranked ahead of LSU in the BCS (USC, Texas, Miami, PSU, LSU are the top 5 until tomorrow). By referencing the human element, I meant that a loss would have likely dropped USC below PSU and LSU, based on how the voters have treated fallen #1's in the past. I really couldn't complain if they didn't drop below, but I would expect the Trojans to have been ranked no higher than 5 if they had lost to Fresno State. That drop would have dropped their BCS ranking, as would the effect on the computer rankings that the loss would have had. I am confident that if USC or Texas miraculously loses over the next two weeks, Penn State will play for the National Championship, and deservedly so. But those teams aren't losing, so it doesn't matter. Question on the BCS rules: didn't the rules change after the Miami-Nebraska debacle, so that if your conference has a championship game and you don't win it, you can't play for the title? Or do you just have to qualify? I think Oklahoma lost in the 2003 Big XII title game but still played LSU, so I don't know. Maybe it was just speculation on a potential rule change, or they didn't approve it, I don't know. I'm rambling. Leave me alone.

My bad, should have read your post more carefully AND checked the BCS standings before posting. Guess the computers do agree that the Bayou Bengals are overrated. Re: your BCS question, I think that rule was merely discussed. I looked on bcsfootball.org and couldn't find any reference to it. And as you point out, OU's loss to K-State in the 2003 Big XII Title Game suggests there is no such rule as well. Sort of makes sense: that rule would probably just end the SEC, Big XII, and now ACC conference championships and/or give the Pac-10 and Big Ten teams a big advantage in reaching the national championship.
