OK, so the fact that he -- not once, but TWICE -- denied my beloved Bs the Stanley Cup title in Edmonton (an did so in humiliatingly convincing fashion). . .
. . .followed by him nearly single-handedly ensuring in 1994 that the Curse of the Garden ended and chants of "1940" became irrelevant. . .
. . .well, it's possible that, except Ulf Samuellson, there is no single hockey player I hated more in the 80s and 90s than Mark Messier.
But good lord, what a player and what a leader. Six Stanley Cups (the last being the stuff of myth), second in all-time scoring, second in all-time playoff scoring, almost 700 goals. It doesn't get much better.
So long, Mess! Can't say I'll miss you...but, yeah, I probably will.

I remember I was in second grade when Messier led my Rangers to the 1994 Cup. He will always rank as my favorite athlete in any sport.
