Worst officials by sport:
NBA - Dick Bavetta. I know everyone in the press raves about him and people love him and all, but there's a reason the NBA schedules him in the finals games they do (can you say conspiracy theories?). Sportsguy had an interesting take on him ("Where have the quality referees gone? Why are some playoff games called completely different than other games? Why are certain refs only assigned to must-win games for the home team? Why does it seem like certain refs have grudges against certain teams, and more importantly, why has there been a preponderance of coaches calling out these grudges more than any other year?"). Of course, Bennet Salvatore sucks too.
NFL - has to be Phil Luckett, and I'm not sure he's even in the league anymore. First the Music City Miracle, then the botched coin toss, then the call on Simeon Rice for "leaping with assistance" on MNF (when he clearly didn't), and then he knocks over a wide open Joe Horn 30 yards down field, causing him to miss what would have been a TD? Awful. Walt Coleman ain't too good either.
NHL - Don Koharski or Kerry Fraser. Koharski is notoriouly bad (plus my boy Schonny will kick his ass if he sees him again), and Fraser cares more about his hair than the game.
MLB - Laz Diaz. Its not that he's a bad ump or anything, its just that he's so jacked up and ready to fight anyone that he loses his cool and tosses people and confronts them left and right.
NCAA Mens Hoops - Tim Higgins. He personally doesn't like me, which I take great pride in (there's a story behind that)... plus he just sucks.

The Biggest Guns of Any Official Award has to go to Ed Hochuli of the NFL. I swear he buys his shirts a size too small so he can show them off.

Hoc is a god amongst men. Probably the BEST NFL ref. Him or Johnny Greer.

completely agreed on the ed hoculi call. i'm pretty sure one of the fox crew guys was joking that he does push-ups just before coming out of the tunnell so he looks bigger. i think there's a definite possibility that happens.

i LOVE the fact that you guys took this seriously. Bravo. Always serious, aussie. Always. If you want, I could give you a treatise of NFL and NHL refs. I'm the dope at the sports bar who, when the refs are introduced, goes on a 10 minute tirade about why that guy sucks. People tend to love it, but usually follow that admiration with "how the hell does that idiot know who Don VanMassenhoven is?!"

The entire city of St. Louis says. . .Don Denkinger.
Henry Iba, Paul Westphal and Doug Collins say. . .Renato Righetto.

Craig Esherick says. . .any Big East ref.
The Buffalo Bills say. . .Phil Luckett.
Desmond Howard and the Michigan Wolverines say. . .referee John Nealon and back judge Ken Baker.

Agreed - Tim Higgins lacks the rudementary counting skills to be a third grader, much less a BE referee.

How did I miss this thread? I vote for the guy who asked us to hurry up so he could get to a real game...that was Teddy Valentine, right?

How did I miss this thread? I vote for the guy who asked us to hurry up so he could get to a real game...that was Teddy Valentine, right? Oh yeah. He did that during a Georgetown-Seton Hall game at MCI. His "real game" was the Duke-Maryland game in College Park the following day. Teddy doesn't work here no more...really, he shouldn't be working anywhere. I don't mind TIM-MAY!!! as much as a lot of Georgetown fans. Actually, I think he probably get almost double the crap for bad calls b/c like 90% of the student section thinks Jim Burr = TIM-MAY!!!...people yell "You suck, Higgins!" all the time when Burr does one of our games. Of course, TIM-MAY!!! didn't work a GTown game at all last year, meanwhile Bob Donato who I absolutely hate did about 12. Also worth noting despite the fact that he's really good IMO is that Mike Kitts reffed in both games that immediately came to mind when I thought of specific bad officiating jobs in GU games: the 6-man game against Seton Hall and the OT win over WVU that sent Esh over the edge and prompted that famous tirade. (As much as I love that tirade and still laugh my arse off when I read it, it's too bad that gets remembered more than Mike Sweetney going for 35, 19rbs, 4ast, and 5blks. Everyone talks about his famous 35-20 game but no one mentions this one.)

Hoc is a god amongst men. Probably the BEST NFL ref. Him or Johnny Greer. Best retired NFL ref is Red Cashien (sp?), now seen in the Coors Lite "Refs who yell 'first down'" ad.

MLB - Laz Diaz. Its not that he's a bad ump or anything, its just that he's so jacked up and ready to fight anyone that he loses his cool and tosses people and confronts them left and right. Eric Cooper is worse. He's also ready to fight all the time but is also a terrible ump to boot. His strike zone must require some element of randomness to define on Ques-tec. Career highlights include tossing Mark McGuire in the first inning during his HR binge and inciting an argument with Kerry Wood last year. Many other honorable mentions, though: CB Bucknor: Doesn't pay attention half the time; last year, caused a riot in Wrigley when he spaced out as Dusty Baker called for a double switch, then called the cubs out for batting out of turn the following inning. Bill Hohn: The next time he gets a close HR/foul call correct without help will be the first. Chris Guccione: David Wells yapped at HP ump Larry Poncino, who told him to knock it off. Wells did and began walking back to the mound. Guccione thought that was a good time to run in and eject Wells, as obviously 34,000 people were at Fenway to see Chris Guccione umpire. Mike Reilly: It bothered me that he crew-chiefed the most memorable Cubs home series in each of the last two years, and his crews were terrible at it. in the early-September Cubs-Cards 5 game series in Sept 2003, calls were blown all around for both sides by the Traveling Umpire Circus of Reilly, Chuck Merriweather, Bucknor, and Cooper. Then last year, in late August, when everyone knows that Michael Barrett and Roy Oswalt are going to have a fight, the league sends the same incompetent fools. At least this year that crew has been broken up.

I just learned that (?) Kelley, who just made an awful, how did he miss that call during the Padres-Cardinals series, is married to a woman who works for the Cardinals.
In what other business is that allowed?

Randy Wolf's brother is an ump but I don't believe that Jim Wolf is allowed to work Philly games.
