Wow - in a race most "experts" thought was down to NYC and Paris (well, at least before the whole West Side Stadium fiasco), London sneaks in and wins the 2012 Summer Olympiad. Cheers.

Wow. Can't say I'm surprised Moscow didn't win and NYC definitely lost its lustre after the stadium fell through. London had a very complete plan and is using this olympic bid to expand their public transit system and already had the land for the olympic village and stadia. I'm not sure why Paris fell through - but the UK made a great last minute push sending Tony Blair to Singapore and sending a taped message from the Queen. I'm sure that Chiraque's insensitive comments to Putin and Schroeder this week about other countries in continental Europe and English cooking didn't exactly portray the olympic spirit that the committee was looking for.

Everything I read in the New York papers had London rated ahead of NYC in the evaluations done by the IOC. New York was given good ratings, but seemed to be below Paris and London. It also seems that the initial frontrunners often fail to gain these bids, for whatever reasons.

A lot of British press articles on the Web are pointing out how Chirac's gastronomic comments didn't help with the two Finnish voters that presumably sided with the UK, 34-30. If they would have voted for Paris, it's a tie, 32-32. The original quote was that "The only thing [the British] have ever done for European agriculture is mad cow disease. After Finland, it is the country with the worst food." Also, did anyone catch the irony that the London Olympic rally was held in Trafalgar Square, named for the epic naval battle against the French 200 years ago? news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/olympics_2012/4618507.stm
