So Steinbrenner has called a meeting to talk at his players and coaches about why they don't want to win as much as he does. I think the meeting would go something like this:
[George is talking about himself in the third person]
George Costanza: I think it's time for George's lunch.
George Steinbrenner: Yes, it is. Let's see what I got today. Ham and cheese again. And she forgot the fancy mustard. I love that fancy mustard. You could put that fancy mustard on a shoe and it would taste pretty good to me.

The origin of the Ken Phelps subreference: -------------------- Steinbrenner: Mrs. Costanza? Estelle: Yes? Steinbrenner: My name is George Steinbrenner, I'm afraid I have some very sad news about your son. He's dead. Estelle: I can't believe it. He was so young. How could this have happened? Steinbrenner: Well, he'd been logging some pretty heavy hours, first one in the morning, last one to leave at night. That kid was a human dynamo. Estelle: Are you sure you're talking about George? Frank: What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs and over 100 RBIs last year. He's got a rocket for an arm. You don't know what the hell you're doin'! Steinbrenner: Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people loved Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying "Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps." sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/story?page=katcher/sports_seinfeld

Quantrill and Stanton to go, Sheffield doing all he can to avoid being dumped... let the youth movement in the Bronx FINALLY begin!
Its going to be funny when they call up all these prospects and realize they don't have any good ones left.

What youth? They've decimated their farm system. ... I am just diappointed the Braves can't crush them in the world series this year.

Its going to be funny when they call up all these prospects and realize they don't have any good ones left. Buffalo, I actually think Yankees Farm System is improving again--when they hype guys beyond belief is when I get skeptical as it's more for trade purposes but look at how Cano and Wang have been two of their best players and EVERYONE in media and "industry sources" said they were not Major League prospects. The thing that gets me is that if you look around MLB many teams who call Yankee system "terrible and overrated" also carry their former prospects on their roster. Most teams have at least 1 guy who was a Farmhand, so it goes both ways. Maybe some of these other teams should be grateful that Yankees develop their players and also send them money and prospects for Veterans. They might not be stars, but if they stick on Major League Roster they aren't that bad. Last 3 guys who have been "overhyped" supposedly were Brad Halsey, Cano, and Wang. I'd take them over 90% of the CRAP I've seen called up by teams as "future stars"-especially in the NL where that league is terrible right now.

No I agree with you RDF... it is getting better. But they've depleted it for so long, I think there are more Henn's in the system than there are Cano's or Wang's.
Time will tell if guys like Escalona and Duncan are the real deal.

Time will tell if guys like Escalona and Duncan are the real deal. Escalona isn't considered a top prospect--he's a utility IF type. They have Ramiro Pena at AA right now and he's a 19 year old SS who is supposed to be the goods. Marcus Vechionni is a tremendous prospect and Phil Hughes is tearing it up this year--his first full season as a Pro. (#1 Pick last year who is a hard throwing RHP). Duncan still has time--I just wish he'd quit worrying about power, and focus on hitting for average and OBP. My argument is directed at the idiots who don't pay attention to the ROSTERS of MLB Teams and just trash the Yankees for "not developing" players. When a player is traded and makes it to Majors, that means they were developed to some extent right?? So maybe these talking heads should take a look around Major Leagues and actually count how many people were originally from Yankee Farm System before saying they "never develop" players. I'm not saying these guys are all stars, but they obviously are good enough to make team, so it's not as awful as the talking heads preach.

I'm sorry - but why are the Yankees attempting to trade Sheffield, who has arguably been one of the two most productive players on that team? It would seem to me that making that man mad is not a long term positive strategy for the health of your clubhouse ...
