If Domes are so great, why are the Twins so desperate to build a new stadium?
But on to a more important topic, the Sox beat the Orioles tonight 3-2. Jon Garland picks up his 7th win. Amazing.
Go you White Sox!

Go you White Sox! Garland is the easiest sell in all of baseball. I think the Sox have a shot, but there's an extremely strong correlation between strikeout rate and success. And Garland's K rate implies he's lucky.

Run support gods are fickle, fickle creators WS fans...they smile one day...and smite you the next.
Enjoy the bounty, for now.

If the run-support gods are fickle, then the Sox have alot to look forward to, since they're hardly blowing teams away with their offense. The Sox really need to be courting the gods of quality pitching, since that's really been the key to their success thus far.
It does trouble me a bit that while the Sox have 'inning-eater' pitchers who are delivering quality start after quality start, no one on the staff is really a power pitcher. Nevertheless, playoff teams are generally built on pitching and defense, so I'll take it.
Particularly if it means the Twinkies can turn their dome over the the Vikes early this fall.

Cubs fan popping in to say something nice - really. I went to the Cell today with a friend whose grandmother was celebrating her 84th birthday. I was impressed with the way the place looks now that the uppermost seats are gone and they actually have some decoration up top. The in-game music was cute without being terribly annoying, and in general, the entire experience reminded me of PNC Park. The place is a solid major league stadium.
Of course, it helped my mood that the O's evened the series. How exactly are the Sox doing what they're doing with Konerko and Dye both hitting .200? Amazing.
Gripes:
The traffic management people were brutal. It was as if they never thought there could be more than 15k there. We wound up getting circularly directed to IIT at 35th and state, although I am pretty confident I saw empty spaces in the main lots on our way in.
What happened to the poppy-seed buns with the Best Kosher hot dogs?
Future: it occurred to me that, Chicago yuppification / urban creep being what it is, that in about 10 years, there will be $500k+ condos going up in that neighborhood, followed by bars and restaurants. For anyone who knows the recent history of that neighborhood, it's shocking.
I'll go away now so you can get back to talking about how many "Cuck Fubs" shirts to buy for the series next weekend.

Interesting to see so many of the [Other] Sox fans on the board.
I'd start a "Official Rangers Nation Thread", but it'd be a very quiet place. Outside of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, is there an MLB team with less of a national baseball following than the Rangers?
It's been, what, 33 years for the franchise and it's still a rite of summer when the local baseball coverage shuts down about the time Cowboys' training camp opens in California.

O's fan chipping in here: Glad to see the Birds salvage a split. I was impressed with Sox pitching (well, Garland and Buerhle, less so with the others obviously!).
I was amused to see Guillen say, after the 2nd game, "I'd rather be lucky than good." (at least that's how he was quoted in the Baltimore Sun). Somebody better remind Guillen that luck doesn't last 162 games; I'll take good instead.
There's always two sides to every story: your side, my side and the truth. My side says the O's were a broken-bat 2RBI Game 2 single and a Garland changeup that Tejada couldn't handle in the eighth inning of Game 1 away from a sweep. Your side obviously views it differently and the truth is a split. Here's hoping for a rematch in the ALCS!!!

I think baseball teams need a natural rival to instill the hate that keeps fandom going through the years. BoSox have the Yanks, ChiSox have the Cubbies, but the Rangers seem pretty isolated down there in Arlington. Well, that and the fact that the franchise relocated to Texas, land of football. As you note, the franchise really couldn't have picked a more inhostpitable area culturally.

Keep it going fellas.

Terrific win yesterday, and on the threshhold of sweeping the Cubs. Contreras hung tough, and the Sox exploited the inevitable bullpen collapse. Let's win today. Go you White Sox!

Time to stir the pot a little -
Sox still have the best record in baseball, despite the relative collapse of Garland (0-2 in his last two after going 8-0 to open the season).
It appears Konerko is starting to come around.
And while Guillen left me scrating my head a bit, and then tuning out briefly in frustration, he should be thanking Perez for bailing him out. Nice dramatic comeback against the best team in the AL West! Now, let's go out and secure the series today!
Go! White! Sox!

Lots of moves yesterday that left me wondering what the heck Ozzie was doing. Perez hitting for Thomas (although I read later that Thomas has a hip flexor; unreal, that he gets hurt in his first game back), Perez fans. Everett hitting for Iguchi, Everett fans on three pitches. And where was Hermanson? Is Ozzie reluctant to use him other than to start an inning?

Well, Thomas's flexor tweak necessitated Perez's appearance. Everett for Iguchi, however, was a disappointing head-scratcher (and not just because I've had to replace Vidro with Iguchi on my fantasy team). Maybe that was Ozzie's idea of 'punishment' for Iguchi's defensive miscue in the top of the 9th.
As for Hermanson not appearing to start the 9th, I'm not sure I totally agree with announcer Jeff Brantley, who complained that managers "should let starters start and closers close." However, I definitely would have gone to him over Marte. In fairness to Marte, Iguchi's failure to handle that grounder cleanly was the real momentum-shifter, but with two on and only one out, I'd prefer to see Hermanson than Marte, who's been somewhat inconsistent thus far.
Unless I'm mistaken, isn't this is the second nationally televised game in which Ozzie has made some really peculiar managerial decisions? It's almost like Ozzie feels compelled to do something brazenly against the grain in front of a national audience, if only to prove his reputation as a maverick. I hope this doesn't become a trend, because I'd like to believe we'll see the Sox in the post-season.

Actually, I wasn't advocating that Ozzie put Hermanson in to start the ninth, as Buehrle had a very low pitch count, and a complete game was by no means out of the question. What I couldn't understand, as you point out, showcase, is why Ozzie left Marte in after Iguchi messed up the double play ball. That's why I wondered if Ozzie is reluctant to use Hermanson other than to start an inning.

Well, the Sox made it kind of interesting on Wednesday nite, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with two out against Francisco Rodriguez. Nice that Thomas had already collected his first RBI this year, even tho he's still looking for his first hit.

Who'd have thought that at the beginning of June the teams with the two best records in the American League would be the Sox and Twins? No way I would have predicted that (what with not having any respect for the Sox and all). Hopefully the Twins and Sox can maintain the 1-2 spots in the AL (w/ their spots reversed, of course). Then again, the media will never notice, what with the Boss flipping out again
