Halftime: UMd. 3, Georgetown 2.
Hoyas outshot the Terrapins 9-5 in the half but trail at the half.
Very good crowd at Princeton, at least on the TV side.

End of 3: Maryland 5-4. Hoyas have time of possession but very few shots. Hoyas closed to 1 with :25 left in the quarter.

Maryland takes it 9-8 in OT. A heartbreaker for the Hoyas. They caught a big break on the stick violation to get it into OT, but they had plenty of chances to win. Corno dominated the faceoff circle, Merrill was far and away the best player on the field, and GU dominated possession, but they were unable to take their chances. It was a frustrating end to the season.

And justice is served after the BS stick check call by your coach towards the end of the game!
Just shows how desparate they were!
We'll see ya next year! ;D
Not a BS call when the ball wouldn't shake out of the head of the stick!--Admin

Ugh, go screw yourself, Enterprise.
That stick was ridiculous. The whole game Kessinich was talking up Bill McGlone's athleticism and his ability to cut up the field through multiple men on clears when the only "talent" he had was seen by his illegal stick. UGH.

The "good news" is that I cannot imagine there's another worse step in the progression of increasingly heartbreaking late QF losses for GU lacrosse. Princeton in 02, Syracuse last year, Maryland this year. I think we've pretty much covered every possible angle except having ourselves called for an illegal stick on a goal. So we should be fine next year. ;D
Hey, Jack said it well, there were so many things that we had going in our favor today. Enormous face-off and time of possession edges, a tempo for almost the entire game that was to our liking. Dave Urick channeling Jacque Demers from the 1993 Stanley Cup Game 2 with the call for the stick check (I don't get to make Montreal Canadiens references often!).
And all that time at the end of regulation and the start of the overtime with the EMO, and even AFTER we failed to get a shot in OT we turned UMD over on their first chance but threw it away.
Yeah, basically we lost for lack of an Eric Desjardins (who scored the tying goal on the illegal stick PP in that Stanley Cup game and then the GW in overtime). Really could have used a decent shot at any point after the tying goal--it was basically ours for the taking.
Besides 4 straight and 5/6 QF losses, this also makes it the last three losses for GU that have been by one goal and decided on the final play of the game. They're always right there and just cannot get over the hump for whatever reason--whether it's in a QF or in the regular season against some of the very elite teams in lacrosse. Not that you're not used to close losses if you've been a fan of the basketball team for a while. ;D
Lots of good guys leaving (and man after watching the game today how much will me miss Corno and Merril?), but there's some very good freshman and recruits that I hope will make a difference next year when we finally make the "trip/road to Philadelphia" (tm Dave Ryan).

He'll burn a couch on Route 1 after he figures out how to spell desperate...Stereotypical College Park class and erudition! I guess Enterprise got a little scared when the glue in the stick was discovered.

On a more uplifting note, many congrats to the team, especially the graduating seniors who had to miss their diploma ceremonies yesterday, on another solid season. The quarterfinal thing is disappointing (I believe it's 1-6 now--also due to the excruciating nature of some of the losses) but it can serve as motivation for Urick and the troops to get over the "QF hump" in pursuit of that national championship. It will be interesting to see if JHU can come home with a title that has eluded them since 1987 (an eternity in the minds of most Blue Jay fans!). For fun in the offseason, ask a UMCP student or grad to spell excruciating; don't even bother to ask them if they could possibly conjure up a meaning of the word!!

I guess Enterprise got a little scared when the glue in the stick was discovered. The few seconds in between realizing that he misspelled desperate and laughing at it...and remembering "SON OF A *****, WE LOST!!!!!!": I mean, these are the moments that make life worth living, aren't they? Kind of like rolling over in the morning and looking at the alarm clock and realizing you've got 45 more minutes to sleep before you have to get up for work. Or in Homer Simpson's world, something about the glorious period between the lie and the discovery of the lie. Although you know, just once, I wouldn't mind seeing someone I know on television burning a piece of furniture. Just saying. ;D

Stomach punch of a game. But I've been a Hoya for a few years now, so my abs are pretty solid at this point. I don't really feel like reliving it - I was there - but I'll add a couple thoughts.
1) Did Urick let McClone score that goal? D'Andrea cleared out the net down by 1 with 1:30 to go...weird play. The Georgetown players were VERY certain that he had an illegal stick - maybe they were sitting on the challenge until the right moment. I don't know, but it was a strange sequence.
2) Can't say enough about Brodie and Andy today. Merrill was Merrill - stripping everyone with the misfortune to be near him, and Corno was so far in the Twerp face off guys' heads that they moved early at least 4 or 5 times. Good game from Rich D'Andrea too, though the stats don't show it. He made a couple great saves.
3) Still, we're a young team. The two freshman attacks - McBride and Cannon - are two of the fastest players I've seen in a Hoya uniform. Cannon in particular has a great knack for scoring inside. There's plenty to look forward to, and Urick and the players are simply too good not to get over this hump eventually. We're as good as anyone, but it seems like we get tight, especially on offense. The offense in the first half of the game was so stagnant, like no one wanted to make a play. This team is better when they're loose.
4) Princeton...open the other side of the bleachers you bastards!
5) Driving to Princeton, getting stuck in traffic on the way home, neglecting to bring a jacket in the wind and intermitent rain...I wouldn't care about any of that if I had seen a Hoyas victory. Driving all that way to see Maryland AND Duke win games...ugh. Sucks.
6) Go Hoyas! And Merrill for POY...I haven't seen the kid from Hopkins, but there's no way anyone could play his position better than Brodie does.

Those Princeton folks aren't stupid...the single sided bleachers filling two decks looked great for TV and may have given Princeton a leg up on hosting regionals for the future.
The irony for Georgetown with these turnouts is that when the as-yet unnamed Multi Sport Facility was being designed the 4,500 number was promoted as being sufficient to host NCAA tournament games. But with the growth of the sport and the recent turnouts in places like Princeton and Ithaca, fields like Georgetown and even Homewood may be too small to host games going forward.
