Why does it not surprise me that the Naval Academy seems to be strong in crew?

cMax30s RankingsNational PollThe cMax30s rank 121 heavyweight men's varsity eights. A new (for rowing), "scientific" ranking system that takes into account the times of all race results. The model, "uses a well-known statistical technique called OLS (ordinary least squares). It is based on the premise that although individual race results may vary, if Team A is on average 2 seconds better than Team B, and if B is on average 2 seconds better than Team C, then, on average, Team A will beat Team C by 4 seconds." By these results, Georgetown would lose to top-rated Harvard by 17.6 seconds on average each time they raced. If these rankings hold true, the Hoyas should lose to Yale by 4 seconds tomorrow. Men's Varsity Heavyweight EightsTeam (Seconds Back) 1. Harvard - 2. Princeton 5.1 3. Cal 7.0 4. Washington 7.8 5. Navy 9.6 6. NEastern 10.1 7. Stanford 10.1 8. Brown 10.4 9. Cornell 12.2 10. Disappointing finish for the lightweight 1V, finishing a distant 5th in a race they could have challenged for the win. Let's hope they get it together for IRA's.
