What was the history of the whole Miami not being in the Big East for baseball thing?

I'm not positive if there's a definite reason. But the most likely one, without doing the research, would have to do with the quality of opponents. Notre Dame's recent run of NCAA Tournament appearances is just that--recent--and they weren't in the conference back in the early 1990s anyhow. There's not really much in terms of quality opponents in the Big East. Miami, on the other hand, has 3 CWS titles and countless other appearances to their credit. Just waaaaaay too much of a "big fish in a small pond" situation. With the Independent label (until joining the ACC, which is a true power conference), they could schedule an ambitious slate every year--and they always did have one of the most difficult skeds in the nation.

I'm just wondering whether having to play in a strong conference (or any conference for that matter since they played almost all of their regular season games at home the past few years) this year is going to hurt them or not.

What was the history of the whole Miami not being in the Big East for baseball thing? Apparently, each Big East school can opt out of one conference-sponsored sport, much as Notre Dame does with football. Miami exercised its "out" on baseball.
