The Big East Championships are a very good take, the first day there is great competition in the field events, the track events are mostly trials for the next day. At the end of Saturday, the DMR is very exciting and spirited.
Sunday is awesome, great competition.
Best of luck to both squads and the coaching staff this weekend.

I agree. Although I have not been there in person, one year (at least) they had a webcast of the whole two day meet. It was great for me to watch it in the comfort of my home. Last year they did not have it, and I haven't found it this year.

Heat sheets for the Big East meet are at www.monmouth.com/~scullion/05indoor/bigeast.htmIt is curious that the Hoyas (men) only have one entry in the mile, and it is not Chris Lukezic, who is not entered in a single individual event. I believe he has run only once this indoor season, a 3000m run.

After one scored event the standings are as follows:
1) Notre Dame 15 2) Rutgers University 10 2) Pittsburgh 10 4) Villanova University 3 5) Syracuse University 1
We didn't have anybody in the weight throw. Oh, for the days of Sean Flynn and Kevin McMahon.

The women did the men one better by finishing third. It seems as if the Hoyas winning the BE meet might be just a memory, as the competition and lack of facilities make it hard to be competitive for the top spots. That being said I think the teams, especially the women exceeded expectations. The women really came through.
Women - Team Rankings - 20 Events Scored =============================================================================== 1) Pittsburgh 161.50 2) Notre Dame 140 3) Georgetown University 90 4) Villanova University 84 5) West Virginia University 57.50 6) Boston College 53 7) Rutgers University 50 8) Syracuse University 45.50 9) St. John's University 37 10) U CONN 34.50 11) Seton Hall University 17 12) Providence College 8
400m 2. Kandance Ferguson 55.78 (8) 3. Nichole Torpey 57.27 (6)
500m 5. Ashley Hubbard 1:15.17 (4) 6. Nana Hanson-Hall 1:15.95 (3)
Mile 5. Colleen Kelly 4:58.51 (4)
800m 3. Nana Hanson-Hall 2:11.57 (6)
1000m 3. Sabine Knothe 2:53.63 (6) 6. Kelley Otstott 2:55.43
3000m 4. Nicole Lee 9:38.69 (5)
4x400m 1. Georgetown 3:47.37 (10) (Ferguson, Torpey, Baptiste, Hubbard)
4x800 2. Georgetown 8:59.24 (8) (Hanson-Hall, Knothe, Otstott, Infeld)
TJ 5. Ashley Mondie 38'10.25 (4)

Agree that the women exceeded expectations and seem to have their runners posting better times--They do about as well as possible for a mainly MD program, though it was geat to see the 400m and 4X400 placings. I think the men did reasonably well, my biggest concern is that the recent mens recruits do not seem to be improving a lot, the team may get progressively less competitive very shortly
--not too concerned that we are no longer competitive for the BE title, If we have to make a choice I'd rather have athletes compete and win at the NCAA level in the MD, rather than win at the BE team level and not have attract the truly elite athletes. obvously some schools like ND, seem to be competitive at both levels, which is annoying, but I don't think that they really have any lukezic, o'connell type athletes either at least for the men.

I don't want to downplay all of the great efforts we had this weekend up in Syracuse....I think the program is doing the best it can with what it has to work with.
But I just want to comment on what Reformation posted....
We used to compete for the Big East title and have guys who were in the mix for individual titles nationally, not too long ago. In fact, you can match what we're doing now on the track and it's about even with what we were doing in the late 90's...if not a little better in the late 90's. What we don't have anymore is (as Nevada pointed out), a Kevin McMahon type who could guarentee us points in the throws, a France Davis-Steve Baldi type in the jumps. 8 years ago, we didn't have a lot of those athletes, but we had enough who could score points and get us closer to the top. Even trying to get those type of athletes to the Hilltop is no longer an option, there's no place to throw, and inadequate places to jump and train to jump.
I'm sad to see us not in the title hunt year in and year out, it was a great run through the 90's, special for the university and special to anyone who was part of it.

Bardo, you are right. However, it was good to see the surprises in the field at Syracuse - Leilani Green, 2nd in the PV, and Jesse Patterson, 2nd in the LJ. These were unexpected placings to me. They are surprises mainly because of the reasons you mentioned - lack of facilities.
For comparison sake, the men won the BE indoors title seven out of eight years from 1994 to 2001. We have won a total of 11 indoor BE meets. So not even being close hurts.
BTW, anybody know what happened to Chris Lukezic. I had been predicting that he would redshirt one of these three track seasons one of these days, because he has been such a workhorse. He did run one race this year, a 3000m, so I do not know if that obviates any chance of redshirting for the indoor season.
Another BTW: four Hoyas (alums or current) were nationally ranked by Track and Field News in their top 10 lists this year: Jesse O'Connell, 5th in the 800m; Chris Lukezic, 9th in the 1500; Kevin McMahon, 3rd in the hammer throw; and Sasha Spencer, 8th in the 800m.

Well, hoops is in the middle of a little resurgence, JT III, has the Hoyas playing well, and if he can recruit, we're going to be fine. Starting next year, we play in the best basketball league in the country.
From 1994-2001, winning 7 out of 8 BE Titles in track, now that's something special, in fact, the BE should name the trophy after Francis X Gagliano, it would be a fitting tribute.
I do think that Adminstration felt that track had too big of a team and was spending too much much money traveling.....but if you're going to have a national program you have to go where the great competitions are. Over the last few years the facilities have been taken away without a suitable replacement plan, the emphasis has been on good cross country and success (for the most part) in middle distance events. Cross country has been outstanding, and we're running well on the track, but it wasn't what we had, and that's frustrating.

Came across this cryptic message on one of the track boards about Chris Lukezic:
cause he isnt racing him on bad achilles but instead making sure he is ready for outdoor track? interesting
So it seems as if Chris has some achilles tendon problems. Let's hope it clears for outdoor track. I doubt he would race at the IC4A or NCAA indoors.
