I watched the women's team today play after hearing reports that this once rising program is in the dumps. After going 11-6 two years ago and beating the #4 ranked team in the land, they went 7-11 last year and 0-6 in the Big East. It looks even worse this year, 4 girls have quit and the team looks lackluster going 3-4 against a soft OC schedule.
Today they lost 3-1 to American, a team they beat 5-0 last year. They seemed to have only 16 girls dressed. The coach was the essence of poor sportsmanship, an embarassment to the school. I wonder what is going on here? Why are we losing and why are girls quitting?

what did the coach do that was so unsportsmanlike?
Unfortunately, what's happening to the women's soccer team is endemic of most of the athletic department. So far as I can tell, there are only four competitive sports: Lacrosse Lightweight Rowing Sailing Track
Bear in mind that two of these (lightweight rowing and Sailing) receive next to nothing in terms of financial support for the university and that lightweight rowing doesn't even have a full time coach.

It's got to be tough to figure out the best way to fund sports in GU's athletic department, since men's basketball (and to a much much smaller extent, football and men's lax) is the only sport capable of generating any substantial revenue.

It's very dissapointing to see the women's soccer team struggling like this. I know a lot of the players because I lived on the same floor as all of last year's freshman(this years sophomores).
Hopefully they are able to get things turned around because they are a great group of girls and they deserve better than this.

Agree with comments above that gtwn has 4 competitive sports right now(with hopefully bball becoming #5)
Would seem like some changes are in order 1)Reevaluate which sports to allocate resources to-- i.e., ones that can be competitive with GU's peer schools or at a natl champshp level 2)allocate money from sports that should not be priorities like women's vball to ones that should like soccer, rowing, lax--there is no northeast school that is highly competive in this sport(it seems almost as silly to me as GU spending millions on hockey +ski teams) 3)make coaching changes where necessary, the ivies + other top academic schools do it--cpmpetition is a fact of life in sports-if every coaching job at GU is guaranteed for life regardless of performance its not surprising that GU is prforming poorly in many sports 4)approach the alumni for $ with specific competitive goals + plan to achieve it in each sport incl new coahes, scholarships etc 5)schedule schools that students and alumni care about for all sports.
