Pre-season polls for XC are right around the corner. First race is Sept. 11. But we have good news and bad news on the men's team. The good news is there are 10 new freshmen runners, plus Stanley Lagrenade back again (although more an 800m runner). The bad news is that Matt Debole, XC and middle distance runner, is not on the roster. I assume he was kicked out of school after he and Dan Tebbano trashed Healy last spring. Matt would have contributed a lot to the XC team, but since he behaved so poorly, he appears to be gone either for this year or out of school for good. The 10 new runners are as follows: Michael Banks (Wachuset - MA), Scott Bestek (Delbarton - NJ), Mike Billington (Turner Ashby - VA), Brandon Bonsey (Falmouth - ME), Alex Guney (Bellarmine - CA), Mike Kinney (Hatboro-Horsham - PA), Dan Nunn (SLO - CA), Justin Scheid (Pope John XXIII - NJ), Winston Weatherspoon (Shaker Heights - Ohio), and Shane Young (Herndon - VA). Of these Michael Banks and Justin Scheid will probably make the team right away. But it is good to see that we have some depth. Returning runners will be led by Rob Koborsi and Chris Lukezic. Again, if all goes well, we are looking at a top 10 finish.

On the women's side only four new faces: Jenny Funk (Iowa City), Melissa Grelli (Presentation - CA), Maggie Infeld (Beaumont - OH), and Carolyn Yates (Toll Gate - RI). Of these Melissa Grelli will probably make the first seven. We have a good nucleus of returning runners with Jodee Adams-Moore, Colleen Kelly (grad, but XC eligibility), Nicole Lee, and returning and hopefully all healed Elizabeth Maloy. We have a bunch of middle distance runners, who can help out, but the above should lead the team.
Nobody has seen Matt showing up elsewhere. There was a discussion on Letsrun.com about how he is not listed on the GU roster, but nobody yet has spied him elsewhere. It is too bad that he and Dan felt they had to rip Healy.

The first poll of the XC season is the NCAA Div. 1 women. GU is ranked in a tie for 16th. I believe this is a little low, but reflective of where the women finished in the NCAAs last year. They have some pretty good runners returing, but are a little thin, so if there are injuries, they may be in trouble. A healthy team and the frosh progress nicely, another top 10 finish is possible. Last year was an anomoly, since they had a streak of top 10 finishes.

For those in the DC area, here is your chance to root the Hoyas on against Duke. From the official sports website:
The Georgetown University men and women’s cross country team will host a home meet on Saturday, September 11, at The Plains, Va. In addition to the Hoyas, the men and women’s squads from Yale, Duke and James Madison will be participating in the meet, while American will send its men’s squad only.
The women’s race will go off at 9:00 a.m., and the men’s will follow at 9:45 a.m. To reach the race course, take 66 West until you reach Exit 31 marked The Plains and follow the signs.
Go Hoyas!!!

It is sad that I have to get (incomplete) results on the Georgetown Invitational (Great Meadows) XC meet from the Duke site. Duke (boo) won both the men's and women's title, but since this comes from the Duke site, I don't know who ran for the Hoyas, whether their A or B team. I figure the Hoyas held out many of their good runners, but I don't know for sure. Nothing on the Georgetown official athletic page.

GREAT MEADOWS, Va. - Duke cross country swept the Georgetown Invitational Saturday, capturing the team crown and individual titles in both the men's and women's races at Great Meadows State Park near Manassas, Va.
The women placed five runners in the top seven spots in the 5,000-kilometer race, led by Ali Henderson who finished the race in 18:05.48. Also finishing in the top five for the women were Tia Ferguson in second (18:20.25) and Elle Pishny in fourth place with a time of 18:41.06.
As a team, Duke finished the race with 20 points, followed by Georgetown (38) and James Madison (80).
On the men's side, Nick Schneider captured the individual title, coming across the finish line with a time of 19:49.05 in the 4.1-mile race. The second-place runner, Pat McCadie from American, was over 15 seconds behind, finishing the race in 20:04.13. The remaining spots in top five belonged to the Blue Devils with Michael Hatch finishing in third (20:13.55), Keith Krieger coming in third with a time of 20:14.60 and Chris Spooner crossing the line in fifth-place after a 20:24.25 performance.
The team finished with 27 points, followed the closest by Georgetown (42) and American (59).
The women return to action next weekend at the Aztec Invitational hosted by University of San Diego. The men have a week off before competing at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. on Sept. 25.

Hey Nevada, did GU run its A team. If they did, it would seem like a pretty subpar performance

I have no idea. No results for the Hoyas yet except for the total scores. GU usually holds out the big guns in the first one or two meets and runs freshman and others, who usually do not make the top seven. I think we will have to wait until GU puts it up on its website. The meet was 9:00 am EDT, and it is now 10:00 EDT, and no results yet. Duke and American both have the results of their runners. Since it was GU's meet, it should be their responsibility to get the results out in a timely fashion. I have tried my usual source to no avail.

I finally have the results of the Georgetown XC meet, no thanks to the GU website. In fact, I got the complete results from the Yale website. It turns out that we ran a decent team with our top five finishers in the top 11 overall. However, Rob Koborsi and Chris Lukezic were held out of this meet. I assume they would have been one and two finishers, in which case the Hoyas would have won the men's race. Many of the freshmen ran, and it was a surprise that Dan Nunn was the top frosh, beating out Michael Banks and Justin Scheid (whom I would think would have been first frosh). graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/yale/sports/m-xc/auto_pdf/2004_georgetown.pdfNo GU women's results yet.

I would like to find out what the decision with Debole is. I don't know where to begin to look. The athletic dept., I am sure, would not tell about one of their (former?) students. I think I heard a rumor that he may have been suspended for a year. But that is ONLY a rumor.

The team will not miss Debole.
What he did was a disgrace to the program.
Good riddance.

The GU website finally reported on the XC results from this weekend. They only list the top four finishers for GU in both men's and women's races. The women did not run the A team, as freshmen Maggie Infeld and Mellissa Grelli led the team with 3rd and 5th place finishes, respectively. Erin Henry and Sabine Knothe finished 9th and 10th, respectively. www.guhoyas.com/sports/w-track/spec-rel/091404aaa.html
