Kevin didn't make top three. Still has a chance though to make the team, if he can throw an A qualifier between now and Aug. 9. But I believe one other guy must do it too. Otherwise, only the winner will go.

Disappointment #2 tonight as Sasha finished 8th in the final. But to make the final is a victory in itself.

It was a great run, but Jesse came up two places short:

Two more Hoyas, both in the 1500m, Chris Lukezic for the men, Treniere Clement for the women. I think Treniere actually has an outside chance - she has been running so well. The NCAA champ is not in the race (Tiffany McWilliams out with a stress fracture), Regina Jacobs might be out on drug charges, Suzy Favor Hamilton might not be sharp, Marla Runyan will be coming back from running the 5000 (if she runs the 1500m at all). Chris, I think is a little too inexperienced, but this will be good experience for 2008 - definitely look for him (and Jesse) there.

Surprise, surprise, another Hoya, Eric Savoth, shows up and qualifies for the final of the 5000m. Not one of the favorites, but he ran well tonight. Still coached by Coach Gags.

Actually, Eric has an outside chance of going to the Olympics. Since Jonathon Riley has the only A standard mark for the Olympics, if Eric happens to run the A standard before Aug. 9, and nobody else above him does, he and Riley will go.

In the 1500m Olympic Trials, it is ironic that Chris Lukezic made the finals and Treniere Clement did not. In the NCAAs it was the opposite with Treniere making the finals and coming in 2nd, while Chris missed qualifying for the finals. Last night he qualified in the slower heat, so that is good for being refreshed for Sunday's final. Of course, there are six guys in his heat, who are rested. As far as Treniere, she was in the faster heat, and her time could have won the first heat, but she didn't even qualify, as the first five in her heat qualified automatically, and the next five best times over both heats moved on; she had the sixth fastest time. This is good experience for both Chris and Treniere, and I can imagine both will be competing for a spot on the team in four years.

These are interesting comments from two posters on the dyestat.com board (2nd comment from anyone here?):
quote:Originally posted by go_at_800 i thought Lukezic (sp) looked very good last night. He was in the slow heat and he didnt win but he was in last for the first 1200-1300 meters and then when the pace picked up he moved up a bit and then with 100 to go he BLEW BY like 6 people.
He was absolutly flying compared to everyone else and he literally jumped in between 2 people to qualify for the finals. that was awsome to watch.
I was saying to my dad b4 the race that i hoped he would do well but then when he was in 2nd to last and then out of the picture with 300 to go i was a little disappointed but then he just flew in.
I dont see him getting top 3 in the final or anything but im glad he made it being that this is what he said he was training for and everything.
I had the exact same thoughts. Go Hoyas!!

How about Chris!!! After trailing in the last place for the first half of the race, Chris Lukezic, rising junior, takes 4th at the 1500 m Olympic Trials. Usually, 4th is the worst possible position in the OTs. But Chris's chances of going to the Olympics were pretty slim, because he does not have an A or B standard for the Olympics. It used to have a chance to get that standard after the trials by running in Europe, but this time the USOC has to submit four names in consideration for running in the Olympics. Even though Chris finished 4th, there are other people with A and B standards, so they were submitted before his name. Anyway, great race for Chris, and look for him to run in China in 2008.

Two of the four nominees in the 1500m are Jason Lunn (5th today) and Grant Robison (didn't make the finals), two men Chris beat in finishing 4th.

CHRISTOPHER LUKEZIC
"I felt really good and bounced back after NCAA's. I've never run from the back before. I was too far off the pace up front with 700 to go, and was making up ground the whole way until the last 800. I was a lot more tense at the NCAA's and out of it mentally. I kept my head clear here, Alan (Webb) deserves it. We worked out three times a week in the fall, and then again in the spring when he got back. He's like a teammate."

To summarize, we had a couple of Hoyas finish close to the top, but I don't think any are going to the Olympics. Kevin McMahon, if he can manage an A qualifier by Aug. 9, would be selected. So it may be the first Olympics since 1980, when we boycotted, that there are no Hoyas on the track and field team. I may be wrong, but we have had several Hoyas at the Olympics. Over the last 20 years, we have had John Gregorek, John Trautman, Steve Holman, Rich Kenah, Bryan Woodward, and Kevin McMahon represent the US at the Olympics.

Looks like it's up to AI to carry the Hoya flag in Athens.
