There are about two weeks until the Olympic Trials in track and field take place (unless everybody is declared banned from the Olympics because of taking illegal substances). There will be a number of Hoyas and alums participating in the trials. There is a standard at which you automatically make the trials and a provisional mark. In most of the event they also have a number of runners, who they let participate. I am not sure how many Hoyas have qualified, but three participated in a "last chance" meet to get a qualifier or just for training. Sasha Spencer did the best last night as she won the 800m in a good time:

Some more results, this time from North Carolina. Treniere Clement continues her hot running as she won the 800m (dropping down in distance) probably a personal best. I believe Alice Schmidt in 3rd won the NCAA 800m last year.

Also, running were Chris Lukezic (dropping down from 1500m) in a PB (except for his relay leg at Penn), Ali Najjar, and former Hoya, Courtney Jaworski.

I guess most of you received this today from the GU Alumni Association:
Hammer thrower Kevin McMahon (C'94) is hoping to participate in his third Olympic Games after being a member of the U.S. team in both Atlanta and Sydney. Kevin, who was on campus this month for his 10th-year Reunion, qualified for the trials in the hammer on April 11 with a 74.07-meter throw in Berkley, Calif.
Bryan Woodward (C'97) already qualified for the track and field trials in the 800 meters with a 1.45.46 last summer in Budapest. Bryan ran the 800 at the 2000 Olympics in Sidney, finishing fifth in the sixth heat.
Other track and field athletes hoping to participate in the Olypimcs include class of 2004 graduates Jesse O'Connell (800 meters) and Treniere Clement (1,500 meters) and junior Chris Lukezic (1,500 meters). All three have posted provisional qualifying times and are awaiting confirmation for their entry into the Olympic trials.
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field will take place in July at the A.G. Spanos Sport Complex at Sacramento State. The top three finishers in each event qualify for the games.

The Olympic trials for track and field begin Friday in Sacramento. Eight current of former Hoyas are in the pool for the trials, but only one is qualified and declared and that is Kevin McMahon in the hammer throw. The others with their status are as follows:
Bryan Woodward, 800m, qualified, but open (not declared?) Jesse O'Connell, 800m, provisional and pending Ali Najjar, 800m, not qualifed and open Chris Lukezic, 1500, provisonal and open Tyrona Heath, 800m, provisional and pending Sasha Spencer, 800m, provisional and open Treniere Clement, 1500m, provisional and open
Of these, Bryan, Jesse, Chris, Sasha, and Treniere should make it into the trials because their provisional marks are good enough to fill the fields (around 30 in each event). Tyrona may make it.

An update on the OT qualifiers. Bryan Woodward is now qualified and declared in the 800m. Jesse O'Connell is the first provisonal qualifier, so, since there are only six automatic qualifiers, he is almost guaranteed a spot in the trials in the 800. Chris Lukezic is the 4th provisional qualifier in the 1500m, and there are 10-12 automatic qualifiers, so he should be contesting the trials also. On the women's side, Sasha Spencer is the 2nd provisional qualifier in the 800m, and only six are automatically qualified. Tyrona Heath is the 21st provisional qualifier in the 800m, so she may just get in. In the 1500 Treniere Clement is the 11th provisional qualifier, and seven are definitely in, but there might be five more, who have the time but have not declared.

Jesse, Sasha, and Tyrona have all been upgraded from "pending" to "declared" in the 800m pools. No such upgrades in the 1500m yet.

Nevada great work. Just wanted to point out that there is at least one Hoya behind the scenes as well ... Joe Sallette (C'04 and former GM for GUTV) is a spotter/tape logger for NBC sports covering Track and Field, so those highlights we'll see on TV will have passed through him -- not to mention that he'll also be making the trip to Athens. Frankly, I believe this could be a great story ... to have Hoyas on both sides of the Olympics. Good luck to everyone!!!

Thanks. Good info, Irish. Maybe Joe could guarantee that we get some Hoyas on TV tomorrow.
Jesse O'Connell is running well. The 800m, however, is one of the toughest events to make the team, as Krummenacher, Robinson, and Johnson are the favorites to be in the first three. Jesse won the slowest heat, which is good, because the semis are tomorrow. Want to qualify as slow as possible. However, that title goes to Johnson, NCAA champ. I think he knows what he is doing. Caught the last auto qualifier in his heat. Jesse has been a tough competitor all year, so anything can happen.
Just found this comment of one of the running boards:
Oh, and Jesse O'Connell will make the team.

Good for you, NYC! I have done my duty in sparking an interest in the Hoyas at the OTs. My excuse is that I was at church tonight. Good for Jesse! It will be hard to make the team, because there are some good runners in the 800m. I am not counting Jesse out though. Go Hoyas!

Some quotes from Jesse and Sasha:
JESSE O'CONNELL, unattached
"I did what I needed to do. I let myself get too far back yesterday so today I stayed fourth or fifth and I know I can close with the best of them."
SASHA SPENCER, Nike
"I felt good coming into it, really good after yesterday. I thought up until the start of the race that the top four and the next four fastest advanced. When they announced it was top four from each round, I realized I needed to stay out of trouble and be in those top four spots, instead of going home."

Another quote from a running board:
I predict youth will be served on Monday.
I think O'Connell, Burley and Johnson have a decent chance to go 1/2/3. Krumm is going to be right there, but he is far from his best in 2004. If Sam and Jesse are right there at 600, they can run down anyone. JJ takes it out in 51 and holds on, Krum and Peterson close fast and battle JJ for 3rd, with O'Connell winning in 1:45.0, Burley at 1:45.5. A photo for 3rd. Robinson back in 5th or 6th.
