i believe a miler named alex guney, from bellarmine college prep in san jose, ca, is also running for gtown next year. i know him fairly well, he's from my high school, i was a year ahead of him and ran with him (err, more behind him) on the x-country team for 4 years. he's run a 4:15 mile, can also run the 800 possibly b/c he has a solid kick. don't know if he has a scholarship or is a walkon, i was hoping to get in touch with him this summer. any info?

CAHoya07, he's probably a walkon, because I haven't heard about his coming to GU yet. If so, sounds like a good one. Thanks for the info. BTW, were you taught by Kevin McMahon, still one of the best hammer throwers in the US? If so, what is the scoop on him? I assume he will be at the Olympic Trials in Sacramento this year.

as a matter of fact, nevada, i took mr. mcmahon's graphic design class my senior year. he's a great guy. no info on how his hammer throwing is going, however, but i'm sure he's training hard.

CAHoya07, that's great that you had a chance to take Kevin's class. Incidentally, he is one of three US hammer throwers to make the Olympic B standard for the 2004 Olympics. If he wins the trials with the the A or B standard, then he goes. If no one makes the A standard, only the winner of the trials will go, if that person has at least the B standard.
HAMMER "B" (74.35/243-11) John McEwen* (NYAC) Kevin McMahon (NYAC) James Parker (USAF)
*currently suspended for two years due to doping violations.

Oh, no, I graduated from GU about 20-25 years before he did. Just am an avid track and field fan, especially of the Hoyas.

sounds good, when are we gonna get a home track that our runners (and bums like me when the track team isn't on it) can practice and have meets on?

They are allegedly doing that now. Renovating the Boys and Girls Club Track who's entrance is at 38th and R Streets. If you ask me, a state of the art track should be priority #1 to add to Kehoe or the MSF when it comes through. Its a pity one of our most successful organizaitons is kept off campus.

The renovations to the field formerly known as Western HS Field will not be usable for meets. In fact, the track there was a fifth-mile instead of a quarter mile in size.

Is that the Duke Ellington track? At least the team can get some practice there without having to go over to Virginia every day. Are there jumping facilities there too? Will the students, like CAHoya07 be able to run for fitness too? I wonder how it got to be such an odd distance. I agree that Georgetown's own track should be a priority.

I saw that. It looks good for next year. Anybody hear any more about Matt Debole? Did Ashley Hubbard run in the AOC meet in NC?

Didn't see Hubbard's name there. Have no idea about Debole(I have no inside sources), wonder about Elizabeth Maloy and Rod Kodborsi, have they recovered from their injuries. Would seem that we are looking good at 1500- X/C, the 800 will require some people to move down/up---what do people think.

I think Rob tried to run in a late season race, but might have dropped out. So maybe it is just a matter of getting more rest. I don't know what kind of injury it was. Elizabeth injury, I think, was a stress fracture in her back, which does not sound good. I think she also made an effort on the track after the injury, but that did not last long. I hope that both Rob and Elizabeth are able to heal up over the summer.
We may be hurting in the 800m next year. Chris Lukezic and Nat Glackin are the only ones, who have experience running the 8. Matt Debole could have been another one to run on the 4 x 800m relay, but we will have to wait for that. I don't know if Michael Banks has a good 800m time in HS.
The XC teams should be good for next year, especially the men's team, if Rob gets better and Matt comes back.

echoing buffalo and nevada's sentiments, i really think georgetown needs an all-weather, state of the art track for its athletes, which also should include quality field facilities. didn't there used to be one on top of kehoe, what happened to that? and i'd also like some more info on this oddly sized ellington track, which i understand is currently being renovated. i guess they can't have meets there b/c of the size, which is a shame, b/c as a high school distance runner and with one of my former teammates on the team next year, i would love to watch our guys and girls in action. also, as previously stated, will they let non-track athletes like me run on it?
it's a dirty shame that in general, georgetown athletics never seems to have a home-field advantage. i don't care that we are an urban campus, we MUST find a way to get better facilities.
sorry for the rant.

Here's my addition to that: screw the Ellington track. If we can't get a state of the art track on the MSF, put one on Kehoe. You know how all the fields up there run East-West now? I say on the SOUTH most part of Kehoe, put a great track field. Option #3, redo that field the soccer teams use on the NORTH end of Kehoe a bit and add a great track to that. I think its a huge travesty our best athletic team (arguably) is nowhere to be found on campus.
One hope - as I posted on the HoyaTalk board, there will be new plans for the MSF coming out soon. HOpefully they will include a track. Incidentally, where IS the Ellington track? If it is the BOys and Girls Club field at 37th and R....ugh. People walk their dogs there and there is dog crap all over all the time, countless teams and people use it for whatever...again, a travesty. Maybe our new AD will push for a change!

The "old" track seemed to be a state of the art facility. About 10 years ago I flew into National and flew right over the track (red in color). I even got to see an evening track meet there on that trip, as I stayed at the inn at GU. However, it was build right on top of Yates and it had drainage problems or something, and it would leak into Yates. So, they removed the track. Sigh!

The "old" track looked nice from 1000 ft. but it was never state of the art and always lacked field practice. For all the success of the program it deserves a first class facility, but the land is all gone to do that.
