The Hoyas got off to a good start with the women's distance medley relay. Although they finished 2nd to Tennessee, they beat such good teams as Stanford and North Carolina (the Tarheel women owned the Penn Relays last year).

The men started out with a bang, just missing Arkansas (which has been THE track power in the country for the last 20 years) in the DMR. The results (with Chris Lukezic running a sub-4:00 mile on the anchor [unless it was 1600m]).

Women's sprint medley relay:
Section 2 1 3:51.30 Stanford *Janice David, Ashley Purnell, Nashonme Johnson, Ashley Freeman 2:09.0 2 3:59.00 South Carolina 3 4:01.09 Maryland 4 4:01.19 Essex CC (NJ) 5 4:07.05 Georgetown 6 4:08.72 Georgia Tech 7 4:10.45 East Stroudsburg 8 4:11.43 Sacred Heart DQ Houston
The Hoyas finished 26th of 44th total. Not particularly a strong event this year for the women. Probably with all the relays, a B team effort.

Just as I had thought; they were saving their big guns for the 4x800m relay, and the Hoyas came through in flying colors, winning by almost 3 seconds. Too bad they don't have the individual splits; I'll try to track them down.
CM 4x800m Championship of America Quotes & Notes
1 7:13.75 Georgetown *Ezra Richards, Ali Najjar, Chris Lukezic, Jesse O'Connell 2 7:16.39 Kentucky *Nick Davenport, Paul Ciurlys, Jean Balan, Kris Landers 3 7:23.15 Arkansas *Sam Vazquez, Said Ahmed, Alistair Cragg, James Hatch 4 7:23.79 Michigan *Sebastien Lounis, Andrew Ellerton, Dan Cooke, Rondell Ruff 5 7:28.37 St. Francis (Pa) *Pat Quinn, Andrew Maloney, Liam Smith, A.J. Suravicz 6 7:28.92 Howard *David Wynn, Edgar Sins, Cordis Stanfield, Khary Kenyatta 7 7:29.05 Cornell *Mike Allen, Gordon Hall, James Connolly, Aldo Gonzalez 8 7:29.25 Virginia *Alex Tatu, McGavock Dunbar, Jon Britt, Zach Davis 9 7:30.54 Georgia Tech *David Schmidt, Brendon Mahoney, Barton Crist, Neil McDonagh 10 7:31.61 Pennsylvania *Courtney Jaworski, Scott Sebens, Carson Schmidt, Joe Plevelich 11 7:31.75 Tennessee *Frank Francois, Paul Cross, Ken Schappert, Marc Sylvester 12 7:33.04 Louisiana State *Jeffrey Fisher, Austin Benton, Ben Shumaker, Marvin Pinnock 13 7:36.42 Stanford *Justin Romaniuk, Andy Powell, Seth Hejny, Joaquin Chapa 14 7:41.00 Rutgers *John Morley, Mike Redden, Xavier Mendez, Brian Stanziano
The Hoya performance ranks #7 All-time...
7:08.96 Arizona State 4/ 7/84 7:11.17 Penn State 4/27/85 7:12.29 Villanova+ 4/24/82 7:12.62 Georgetown 4/24/82 7:12.81 Richmond+ 4/24/82 7:13.48 Arkansas+ 4/24/82 7:13.87 Arkansas # 4/24/99 7:13.8+ Kansas State 4/24/70 7:13.95 Georgetown 4/27/85
I believe the Arizon State time had a leg from Mike Stahr, who graduated from GU after the attending ASU his first year or two.

Approximate splits on the men's 4x800:
Gtown - Richards 1:50,Najjar 1:47.3,Lukezic 1:47.2,O'Connell 1:47.8
So the quote above was not exactly correct. It was correct in that three of the guys ran 1:47 legs and one a 1:50, but the slowest leg was the leadoff (which is fairly usual) leg by Ezra, and Jesse ran within himself at 1:47.8.

Great to see the Hoyas win the Championship of America in the 4 x 800 at the Penn Relays, congratulations to the Hoyas for a job well-done. Also, another thanks to Nevada Hoya for once again, staying ahead of GUHOYAS for track updates, Nevada, if you and www.guhoyas were in a race I think you'd lap them about 8 times! (distance of the race=2 miles) It's disappointing to go to the "official" athletic page and not find a picture of the victorious Hoyas front and center....the editors of www.guhoyas don't even consider the efforts at Penn as a "top" story...one has to scroll down to "headlines" to find the write-up. IMHO, the Track team deserves better pub.

LOL, Bardo. Yes, I believe that the track team deserved better. They should have had some pictures. There was a video of the DMR at www.runnova.com It is geared around the Villanova runners and the quality is amateurish at best, but you can see some of the Hoyas running. You can easily spot Jessie running the first leg (1200m), since he is 6'6" and up towards the front. I heard it was windy and the first leg went out conservatively.
