Nice to see the Hoyas sweep a four-game series this weekend, even though I'm not sure how the University of Buffalo stacks up as a D-1 baseball team (I have my suspicions, though). Hoyas stand at 6-5, which hopefully portends a better end of season showing than last year's 14-33. Along those lines, G'town's got one member of the board of regents (or directors, perhaps) with a little bit of an interest in baseball, wonder if it will transfer into an investment in the Hoyas -- McCourt Field, perhaps? www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/dodgers/2004-02-13-dodgers-sale_x.htm?POE=SPOISVA

It looks like I was slightly ahead of the Hoya in pointing to the Hoyas' recent baseball success... www.thehoya.com/sports/030204/sports9.cfmThe hoyas won again yesterday 7-0 over UMBC, bringing their season record to 7-5, and riding a 6-game win streak as they head into three games with Yale this weekend. Let's hope this new success holds up, at least to some extent, as they head into the Big East season.

The GU Baseball team continues to roll, taking two out of three last weekend against Seton Hall, and following it up with a win against Navy this weekend. Competing against a number of scholarship teams, long-term success in the Big East is a stretch, but this team looks to be able to hang in much better than many of the previous editions...
This year -- so far... 16-11 overall (2-1 in conference, 14-10 OOC)
Last year... 14-33 overall (4-22 in BE play, 10-11 OOC)
Keep up the good work, fellas.

4-22? Does Craig Esherick manage the baseball team? -

not that I can remember. I'm pretty sure it's been a long time since the hoyas had a winning season, which probably had an influence on how quiet the whimper of protest was when the baseball field became a parking lot... Thebin protested, and people pined for the field, but among most people, it was for the aesthetics of the field more than the purpose...

The records of the baseball program have been poor for many, many years, largely owing to the fact that it is a non-scholarship program playing in a scholarship conference. The hitting is comparable, but the Hoyas suffer mightily with pitching, and it really hurts late in the season. Still, the early start is encouraging. To give you an idea of how tough the struggles have been, Georgetown has had 19 consecuive losing seasons and was 15-89 (.144) in its last four Big East seasons. Put another way, even with 29 games to play, Georgetown's 17 wins to date has been matched only three times since 1986. Here's a link with Big East baseball standings: www.bigeast.org/reference/records/baseball/

All that losing must be awfully hard on the manager and the kids. It's almost like playing for Charlie Brown's team (icon plug)!
Congratulations to the team for doing so well this year. Hopefully, it will continue, but even if not, they have much to be proud of, under very difficult circumstances.

I read an article on Frank McCourt. Apparently Frank and wifey Jamie are 1975 GU grads. Apparently Frank's dad was a Hoya, and his son currently plays first base for the Hoya baseball team (is that accurate? is he any good?).
McCourt was on the GU crew team. Wonder if he contributed substantially to the new crew facilities?

Hoyas finsh the season 25-30 (8-17 Big East), their most wins since 1985, and best BE record since 1997. Good to see the team competing well this year, and although they'll lose star catcher Michael Lombardi, they should return most of the pieces next year to finish as well or hopefully better.
Now if only Mr. McCourt could do for the Hoya nine what John Grisham has done down in Charlottesville for the UVA baseball team...
