From the "Lawyers Will Make Any Argument" department: A terrorist in Belgium who admitted that he was plotting to bomb a US army base is appealing his sentence. His lawyers are asserting that "admitting to a crime is no proof." Makes me proud to be a lawyer. sg.news.yahoo.com/040218/1/3i4uf.html

Well, technically, they are right. It's not proof that he did it. However, it's certainly enough to justify a guilty sentence or guilty plea. And that is what is important.
Otherwise, any time you go in and plead guilty and admit that you did it, you could appeal and say that there's no proof that you did it (putting aside the waiver of your right to appeal).
