There were at least 15 Taft grads in my class, FWIW. The "Girl Next Door" scenes were shot at USC, although they did seem to try and recreate the familiar gates/spires of GU. Either way, it beats red Georgetown sweaters/jackets and touch football games on frat row-- I watched St. Elmo's Fire again the other day and it's truly disturbing to see UMCP's campus passed off as Georgetown.

My question is, do they even approach Georgetown about using the campus in the first place?

The problem with College Road Trip is that the star isn't going to go to Georgetown. Sure we'll enjoy the first hour and fifteen minutes hearing her say "I must go to Georgetown!!!" but in the end she's going to realize that family is more important yada yada. That or she meets a bunch of Tracy Flicks on campus and that alone is enough to send her fleeing back to the normal people in Chicago. In any event, however it's achieved, the ending will not bode well for the Hilltop Man, now I'm gonna go all day without being able to erase the picture of Martin Laurence attacked by hordes of Copley squirrels on a GUTS bus. Squirrels on a Bus. That scene might actually make the movie compelling. Hey Disney, are you listening to your fans?

I cannot stand Raven. Just hearing her say "Georgetown" raises my hackles.

rosslyn i disagree i think martin lawrance will learn a valuable lesson in letting go of control and letting his kids live their lives and not being so over protective.

I wonder which Georgetown sorority she's staying at. Way to do your research, Hollywood. I remember when I was running late for my Georgetown on-campus interview. That was the pitts... wait...

You couldn't pay me to watch that movie, but it's probably not bad publicity for the university, especially in that it's an African American girl rather than the uppity Tracy Flick.

Dear lord its on tv now. Just saw a commercial during the AFC championship game. They didn't say Georgetown in the commercial though. God does this movie look bad.

I can't believe we are discussing what Martin and Raven will decide to do in this movie. This is horrible looking.
I don't know if Disney approached g town but others have in the past. The West Wing did a scene or two at g town when the daughter graduated. And from what I understand every time they mentioned the name of the school they had to ask permission. Basically a script would be sent to the protocol officer who reviewed it and decided if it was okay. (There was probably some process of people approving it up to and including the VP of Comms. ) I doubt these things go to Jack ever.
I have no idea if we charge for things like that but that could be a deterant. Also, and this sounds crazy. But because of our location, relative lack of space, and year round school schedule (summer sessions) it might be logisitcally very hard for movies to be filmed here. Sure I wish when people mentioned G town for it to show copley / healy etc... but I don't mind if the school opts for education. (if there is a conflict)

ha - I love DC and all but I think NYC might have a leg up on logistically getting a movie in and out without killing traffic. Knowing DC - that could shut the city down for a week. And thats before a pot hole causes a burst water main and the 1" of snow grounds all transportation vehicles for 3 days.

For those of us who did not grow up in New York, is Taft some sort of Exeter/Lawrenceville type of prep school?

Taft is a prep school in Connecticut. From what I remember from playing some youth hockey games there (in the old rink, they recently built a new one) the campus looks like a pretty typical New England prep school, and not that much like Georgetown.

Taft is slightly smaller than Exeter/Lawrenceville, but has become a major feeder for GU, typically sending 30-40 applicants and 5-15 matriculants annually. It has great facilities, including two hockey rinks, as mentioned.

On the subject of Taft, Exonians would scoff derisively, under their breath "third tier." Of course, we would probably also sputter at the idea that Lawrenceville was somehow on the same level, obviously second tier.
Exeter, Andover, St. Pauls, Choate and Deerfield are the cats pajamas.

After 7 years of interviewing the students and reading their applications, at least in terms of the ones who applied to Georgetown, I would not disagree with those 5 at the top of the New England boarding school list, though I also believe Milton has some very strong kids too, albeit more day students. To rank those schools, I would say Andover, Exeter, St. Paul's, Milton, Deerfield, Choate, although the top two are very close and sometimes I think I like St. Paul's better than both.
Taft is a fine school, just smaller, but I would prefer it to the likes of Groton, Middlesex, Hotchkiss, and Loomis-Chaffee, all of which are also fine schools. Beyond those, I could not conceive of paying the tuition of any other New England boarding school (and I would prefer several day schools, especially Nobles, in many cases). Lawrenceville I simply do not know as well, I only know its reputation is solid.

Boarding school must be a strange thing to encounter as an outsider. I can only imagine. Its byzantine traditions, histories and hierarchies are completely incomprehensible to those who attended, let alone those who are unfamiliar with them.

Yeah, the boarding schoolers and cats and pajamas thing definitely provokes the appropriate imagery.
