Nice find Steny. I see you're taking full advantage of the August recess.

I'm not a big fan of any of these lists and generally think that they a load of crap (wasn't it GW that made this list a year back?), but I agree that this quotation shows the importance of Georgetown's basketball resurgence. Despite the grumblings of any anti-big time basketball professor, our top notch academics aren't going anywhere, and the continued tradition of the basketball program can only help our school's overall cache. I'm glad to see that it's paying off.

Clearly, an athletic program has no impact on how the school is viewed nationally and its standing compared to other like institutions.

Clearly, an athletic program has no impact on how the school is viewed nationally and its standing compared to other like institutions. Are you being sarcastic? I hope so. A university with a successful sports team is rewarded with positive publicity, which often translates to cache in the minds of many applicants. Georgetown's admissions department admits that the university's popularity (and in turn its admission standards) rose significantly with the rise of the basketball team in the 1980s. Luckily, the university has built upon that momentum to become what it is today. Duke and Notre Dame are other examples of schools whose "national standing" as an academic institution benefited greatly from the good publicity of a top-notch athletic program.

I like how this article has spawned threads on three different parts of the board and each time by a different poster. Classic.

not to take anything away from cornell, but it makes me wonder how the ivy often considered the least grand is the hottest
