i worked at that domino's sophomore year, great job except that being a bike delivery man i still had to work when it snowed and rained and that was even worse than you might imagine but pulling down great $ and free pizza's as well as a ride back to campus with the next delivery to campus when i was drunk were incredible perks.
and yes, it was at least at some point in the early 90s the busiest in the world. We also had the world champion pizza maker at that time, the contest was for making the most pizza's in a minute if i recall.

Just to let ya'll know, my sources at Dixie tell me that there was an insider who screwed up and that it will hopefully reopen at a later date....

Other Georgetown "institutions" gone but not forgotten: Champions Sports Fans Charing Cross Babalu Winstons Graffiti Houstons True, I would never set foot in any of those places were they still around, but I will remember each of them fondly for taking a chance on 18 year old with a dream, a fiShut upll of dollars, and a powerful thirst. Champs. That one still pains me.

It looked like its closed today on my trip on the GUTS bus. All the neon signs are down, as well as the pink posterboard "SALE" signs.

How about Mac's, The Cellar Door and The Shadows (I think one succeeded the other).

...and Hector's, which used to be the only place to get a greasy cheesesteak or a ham-and-cheese-cold at 4:00 AM on M street...

Is Quick Pita still open? Yes, open until 4am. Sometimes a nice late-night alternative to Philly P.

Cool, I saw a Quick Pita location in the Old Post Office food court last summer, just didn't know if the G'town one was still in business.

Didn't hear precisely that but I have been told that there will still be a liquor store in that location. Before Eagle went away, they also claimed that they would be able to get a space in whatever building replaced them and that they would come back as a two-story Eagle. Does Wagner's on Wisconsin Avenue still deliver if you ask nicely? Also, the boutique theater that was down by Foundry Methodist was called The Foundry. It showed artsy stuff as well as second-run mainstream fare for $2 a head. The Foundry was a great deal back in the years when GPB charged $3 per person.

We usually hit Foundry, I saw Under Siege there if I remember right and definitely Sneakers.
Sometimes we went to Pentagon City or Union Station for movies and even went to a place I think was near GW once.
I think I saw a GPB movie once or twice.
The ones on campus here are a great deal - especially early fall and late spring when they put them outside for free.

GPB movies are free every weekend... unless that changed in the last year and a half.

I was just shocked that in The Hoya someone was quoted as saying people cared a lot more when Sugar's closed. I know like 5 people that had been to Sugar's... and I have a hard time thinking of someone who hasn't been to Dixie/sent a 21 year old friend to Dixie for them. My parents (alums) have told me many stories about their Dixie experiences in their Gtown days, so its just sad for me that it closed less than a month before my 21st birthday...

Sugar's was a staple for lots of people I knew. Dixies wasn't. Other places were closer and not at the bottom of a steep hill. Also, I'd been to Sugar's a good half dozen or so times before I even APPLIED to G'Town. My father and his buddies all went there, so whenever we visited he'd take me there. Liquor stores are a dime a dozen. Greasy spoons in the heart of Georgetown ain't.

11 years at Georgetown now, 10 of which Sugar's was open, never dined there once. The only time I tried, predictably, it was closed.
Dixie was nothing special, and I was more of a Wagner's guy, but let's not kid ourselves- there was no place closer to the main gates that qualified as a full service package store. Wisey's has beer, but not in keg form, and you won't find Jameson next to the Pop Tarts. Fact is, for those without a car, the process of purchasing large quantities of alcohol just got much more complicated.
