Good lord.
The Pub.... Mom & Pop's... Doctor Keys (anyone else remember that one? beer delivered to your doorstep)... The "new" Pub... The Dome (or, "Do Me")... Sugars... ...now Dixie?
Somebody better have Wisey's declared a National Landmark before something really tragic happens.

Good lord. Doctor Keys (anyone else remember that one? beer delivered to your doorstep)... yes, a delivery of several cases of keystone (or keystone dry) and a few bottle of Boones to our village A apt were very nice on cold or rainy evenings.

Sad, sad day.
Re: Key's Place - oh man, that place was the best. I remember one time we called to have them deliver a deck of cards. We felt so bad about that, that we had them throw in a couple of cases of Milwaukee's Best.

Add to that list: Trincus. Roy Rogers. Little Tavern. The Bayou. Sunny's Surplus. The Biograph, Key, and Cerberus theaters. The baseball field. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Alfredo and Miriam's who delivered so frequently to our house Senior Year that one night we had all passed out before they arrived and the guy let himself in, took money off the table and did not even tip himself.
So what if it was a front for Alfredo the Butcher.

There was a place that delivered booze to your doorstep?!! And it couldn't get enough buisness to stay open?! How did this happen?

Indeed a sad day, although I spent my last 2 years living in Burleith and went to Wagner's far more often, but the thought of Dixie's brings back a lot of good memories.
I also second SoCal's post. What the hell?

I have no idea how Keys could ever lack for business. Maybe they closed because of their strict policy of never, ever carding anyone.
And thank you DFW for The Bayou, I had forgotten about that one. That was a huge loss.
(but shame on you, DFW; Mom & Pops was Trincus. I didn't know anyone ever actually used its real name).
I have to say, Dixie was great until about junior year when lots of people had cars and we realized that we could get kegs oh so much cheaper if we were willing to drive to pick them up).
And one more to add to the list (but maybe only for deviants like me). I'm pretty sure Smash on M Street has finally closed up. I will be happy, ecstatic even, if someone has information to the contrary.

Which theater was the one down near the canal and Foundry Methodist? Was that Cerberus? Was the Key the one on Wisconsin that was an artsy place for a bit (I saw The War Room there and a friend of mine saw Like Water for Chocolate there if it's the same place.)
Other places closed: The Leavey Pub (hey I know it sucked - especially from what I hear of the original Pub, but it was all we had.)
Some little pizza and pasta place that delivered and was on the Marriott Munch Money card. They had tiramisu too and burgers and fries. It was on M St. on the same side down a few doors from where the Ukraine's embassy is now.
A little coffeehouse on the corner of M and 35th that delivered food very very late on weekends and almost as late on weeknights. Think lodge was in the name of it. Their fliers and food menus were for "Post Pub Grub" and that's what we called them. Had them deliver a bunch. My roommate ordered from them one time when he was off-campus at his sister's place and the guy showed up 2 hours later all banged up. Somebody had robbed him on the way to deliver the food so he brought a bunch of free food (by then it was around 330 on a Sat. AM.)
Anybody else ever eat at Boogie's Diner on Wisconsin? I loved their chili cheese fries. They had a gift shop downstairs and the dining room was upstairs. Not sure when it closed but I think the one in Vail or Aspen or wherever in CO they started is still open.
Other remembering: I also remember eating at Philly Cheesesteak when it was originally in the old Little Tavern space - there's a Little Tavern nostalgia website that has pictures of lots of their locations somewhere - it may be on the Ghosts of Baltimore site (ghosts as in old stuff, not hauntings.)
Did anybody else ever hear the urban legend about the Domino's on Prospect being the busiest one in America. I also remember prior to coming to GU one of the newsmags pointed out that the Domino's nearest to the WH knew when Desert Storm was starting because of a big pizza order that night (when I got to GU I remember people saying it was the Prospect location referred to.)
Still trying to remember the name of the place off Wisconsin that the G2 stopped near on the way back to campus. It was a sandwich/short order place I stopped on the way home from work over near Van Ness and had dinner if I wasn't going to make it before New South closed. It was near where the employment agency scenes of Dave were filmed on Wisc. They had autographed publicity pictures of Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver on their walls.

They're having a fire sale at Dixie's right now, so if you're within walking distance - GO. NOW. Not much left though.
Indeed, Dixie, R.I.P. I remember being underage and hearing of people getting busted at Dixie, so Towne was the way to go if you were under 21. However, the problem was hauling a 30 pack in your backpack at least 6 blocks straight uphill to the front gates, sometimes in the summer humidity, then all the way back to your dorm. Once I turned 21, it was all about Dixie, only a couple blocks from campus. Alas, no more.
To me this is a much bigger loss than Sugar's because I never went there and only walked by occasionally. Dixie was there to meet me every time I got back to school, right at the end of the Key Bridge, as if to say, "Welcome back to Georgetown, Matt. How bout crackin' open a cold one."
But what can you do. I wonder what's going to take its place; hopefully, another liquor store.

I still feel the sting from the demise of Eagle's. That place put Dixie to shame in size, selection, and price, and you could buy booze with your laundry card. What a place. They even sold their neon signs at the end.
I also still remember the sting of carrying four 30packs up the hill from Dixie. Two in the duffel, one in each hand. By the middle of senior year, they knew me so well they not only got irritated when I tried to show ID, they also hooked up the free wine from time to time. Good folks there.
I know what you mean about the "Dixie greeting", CA. Never ceased to put a smile on my face ....
At least one poster on this Board still buys his kegs from Dixie, even though he lives across the city. Time to go to Capital Liquors, my friend.

I heard it, and I think it could very well be true. I'm not sure where I read this, but if I remember correctly, it said somewhere that the Prospect Domino's at its busiest (typically on the weekends) churns out over 4,000 pizzas a weekend. That is just ridiculous.

Other Georgetown "institutions" gone but not forgotten:
Champions Sports Fans Charing Cross Babalu Winstons Graffiti Houstons
True, I would never set foot in any of those places were they still around, but I will remember each of them fondly for taking a chance on 18 year old with a dream, a fiShut upll of dollars, and a powerful thirst.

If the Domino's stat was an urban legend, it was so good the owner of the Domino's would repeat it. I did a report on that Domino's for an operations class (how's that for half-ass!) and the operator told me they were the busiest proudly. Also told me how many pizzas they delivered in the first quarter of the Super Bowl but I can't remember now.

Urban legend doesn't automatically equate to false in my above usage of the term.... just the fact that it's repeated so much without people knowing for sure.
How many Champions' are still left? I know the BWI Marriott still has one. I had forgotten about Winston's and Sports Fans.
