I don't think Katz went to Maryland.
Anyway I despise my ACC and I am in the stages of writing something for another site o this very same subject. But I'll give credit when its due. UNC is freakin' loaded. I haven't thought much of Duke's talent the last couple of seasons (even though the Blue Devils blew out the Hoyas and almost beat UConn in the Final Four). However I've been impressed with UNC for about a year now. If they ever put it together no one can touch them, including Illinois. Unless Marvin Williams turns out to be as great as people making him out to be there is no one on UNC who is going to be the next MJ, let alone the next Worthy, Jamison, Rasheed Wallace, Carter, etc. I too think McCant's size (about 6'2 ) will hurt him and keep him from dominating at the next level. But this si college. And having five guys who will be first round picks is nothing to sneeze at. Sean May may be a poor man's Mike Sweetney but a poor man's version of that beast is still better than 98% of the big man in America. Add one of the top five point guards in the land plus a talented senior big man like Jawad who can hit shots from outside and you have a damn good team. I don't like it any more than you other ACC haters but UNC is the truth. And as long as the Tar Heels beat Maryland this season I can live with it. ;D

In my opinion, they're the most exciting team to watch since Arkansas '90 & '91, UNLV '90 & '91 and Michigan '92 & '93... Many of you old-heads remember staying up late to catch a glimpse of the Rebels playing on the West Coast...Other than the Hoyas, this is the only squad that I'd stay up for a 12am e.s.t. tip-off...

I don't think Katz went to Maryland. Absolutely right. Andy Katz graduated from the U of Wisconsin in 1990.

"Peter Gammons never coached, played, or scouted, and yet he's being elected to the HOF. I would say that he's an expert. Andy Katz is the Peter Gammons of college basketball."
This could be the most ridiculous statement I've heard on this board.

This could be the most ridiculous statement I've heard on this board. I wouldn't quite go that far-there's some pretty ridiculous things said here, but nonetheless, it's pretty ridiculous. Peter Gammons is THE baseball writer-GM's aren't as well informed as he is about what's going on the baseball world. Andy Katz is nowhere near that level. I've always thought Katz was good, but he's no Gammons-there really isn't anyone who dominates their form of sportswriting like Gammons does.

I'm a 'BEAT MARYLAND OR DIE' ACC fan. Oh how the constant G'town teasing from Herpie fans at school hurts... *crosses fingers and hopes they lose to Clemson* Katz is the 'Peter Gammons' of College BBall solely because that guy, nor anyone else can think of anyone else that wasn't specifically involved in the game. The expert comment is a bit stretching it out.

McCants is easily a lottery pick... Of course he is. He also doesn't play 50% of the game. Even his coach and fellow players have come out and said it. Fantastic talent, but I think Illinois wins.

To say Andy Katz is the Peter Gammons of college basketball is utterly ridiculous. First, Gammons is like an encyclopedia when it comes to baseball and its players, not just at the major league level, but also minor league (AAA, AA, A levels). Andy Katz couldn't even hold his jock strap. I feel sorry for you "closet ACC fans" posing as Hoya fans, when your, eh, "team" Carolina won't win the NCAA championship this year with their "first round" draft pick starting lineup, let alone go to the final four. I bet you guys get excited when OUR Georgetown team wears the powder blue jerseys, instead of our classic navy blue away jerseys, eh? The closer to Carolina colors the better, right? And to compare this year's Carolina team with the Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt, and Stacey Augmon Running Rebels of UNLV , the Arkansas teams of Todd Day, Lee Mayberry, and Oliver Miller, and the Fab Five Michigan teams, WOOOOW! That is some serious Carolina Kool-Aid consumption. When will guys speak their own minds when giving opinions about players and teams, instead of repeating what they hear on ESPN all the time?

I may be hallucinating, but Vitale just gave the Hoyas props on Sportscenter. He said he was impressed by the "young Hoya's squad" and reminded everyone that this was only Pitt's THIRD LOSS EVER at their arena (whatever it's called). Anyway, I'm going to pick my jaw up off the floor and while I try and cope with this. (Not that I'm angry, it's just that my whole world view was just shattered)

Since the title of this thread is my $.02 ill give mine after reading all of this.
1. Dick Vitale is a very biased journalist (if he even qualifies as a journalist), no real denying that. His All America teams and All rolls royce diaper dandy crappy moniker teams are completely slanted pro ACC 2. Jay Bilas goes out of his way not to cheer for his alma mater when they are playing but still doesn't care about a team not in the ACC unless they are top 10. 3. Andy Katz is the most rounded of ESPN guys and usually gives a well balanced amount of info on all teams and conferences, however, he is not Peter Gammons by a long shot 4. Peter Gammons is biased to anything ending in KEE or beginning in RED, He contributes to the overhype of that rivalry, however he is God of baseball. 5. I think that Illinois would smash UNC into the ground with its guard play, much would depend on how May would match up to Augustine and company. 6. I have heard ZERO about the Big 12 and Pac 10 baskeball teams from ESPN this year, not even much about usually gushed Arizona 7. If Coach K asked Vitale to marry him he would say yes

this unc team is not even as exciting as the rasheed wallace, jerry stackhouse or vince carter & antawn jamison teams. felton = ed cota... will not be in nba more than 2 years. mccants = joe forte ... as a celtics fan i know how well that nba career went (ugghhh ... i hate chric wallace and that draft - see sportsguy article on the state of the celtics). Let's not forget that roy williams CAN NOT WIN in the tourney. The '97(?) Kansas team was unbelievable w/ Pierce, Pollard, Jacque Vaughn and they lost in Sweet Sixteen.
Don't drink the ESPN Kool-Aid. They give the most attention to conferences they have exclusive tv rights for hence no coverage of Washington - the team to beat in PAC-10 and minimal coverage of Big 12 - just kansas and bobby knight (ok they have shown two ok state games this year)

Those Carolina teams were exciting to watch...but they had to share the spotlight with Clemson, Maryland and Wake that year...('95)...
