This editorial exhibits one of my major complaints about student journalist at Georgetown -- a complete lack of historical context. (It may also be a problem at other institutions, but I wouldn't know.) "The Davis Performing Arts Center opened exactly as scheduled . . . . " Really? Check out the original timetable: www.thehoya.com/news/030599/news5.htmI know this is a quibble, but all too frequently writers at the Hoya fail to check their own archives before making false assertions. Reading past articles on a particular topic could also be useful in providing historical context. For instance, recently there was this report about a possible $20 million gift to Jewish Studies: www.thehoya.com/news/090106/news3.cfm The article discusses how the program is underfunded and how significant such a donation would be. While this is all undoubtedly true, I was surprised that the article did not mention that three years earlier the program supposedly received a major gift: www.thehoya.com/news/040103/news7.cfmObviously, this never happened, as this endowment is still listed as a development goal for the program: pjc.georgetown.edu/docs/PJCNewsletter-Fall2005.pdf Wouldn't this have been some interesting background to provide? What ever happened to that planned gift?
