We continue to give lip service to our Catholic heritage and mission.

We continue to give lip service to our Catholic heritage and mission. What did you want him to say? "We are going to raise $1 billion to build the greatest Cathedral the world has ever known. And we don't want any of your filthy Proddy money." We know you don't like the current direction of the university, but I cannot for the life of me understand why a speech about raising money for scholarships, faculty salaries, and the sciences is an occasion to bring up that discontent.

I got a fancy letter in the mail with brochures and everything. I thought it was well done. I do wish there was some sort of "wish list" or something so we could know more of what is on the horizon, but there must be some strategic reason they don't do this.
Personally, I think they handle the Catholicism thing nicely.

DeGioia gave 3 main aspects of the campaign: (1) become a more global university, (2) capitalize on opportunities in the sciences and (3) further define Georgetown's identity in the framework of an American research university within the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. For items (1) and (2) he listed some actions being taken to pursue those goals. For (3), he said absolutely nothing about any actions furthering that goal. That's why I said it's lip service.

dairish - I was not in the audience. Please elaborate and tell me what was said about what would be done relative to the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. If he addressed this specifically in any substantial way, I will take back my "lip service" comment.

DeGioia says he hopes to raise at least $500 million. I realize that the $1 billion Georgetown Forever campaign was a significant accomplishment, but is it common for universities to decrease the amount of subsequent capital campaigns?
I do applaud the university for saying scholarships and faculty compensation are two key priorities as I fully agree with that. But how much will $500 million close the gap between us and the 70+ institutions with larger endowments?
