I don't get it. Where are Georgetown, Stanford, Duke, etc.? Are we in the "elite" group already?

Yes, it looks like GU was grouped with the "academic powerhouse" schools. Just off the top of my head, in addition to CalTech, Chicago MIT, and Stanford, it looks like Duke, Berkeley, and Northwestern, have already achieved "old Ivy" status.

If other schools were grouped that way in "academic powerhouse", then why is Chapel Hill on the new list?

What a clever way to kiss the top 40 schools' asses and keep them smiling when they don't like their rankings later.

I don't follow, Tiger. Are you arguing Chapel Hill is an academic powerhouse or shouldn't be on the list at all? (I can't see any argument for Chapel Hill as an established academic powerhouse -- Vandy strikes me as the oddest inclusion. Hasn't it been an elite school longer than Duke or Georgetown?)

hilltopper, Just referring to the reverential way that UNC people already consider themselves to be a powerhouse.
Vandy is probably odd too but maybe they were trying to limit the number in a region.
I know I had Vandy and GU as the 2 out of state schools in my final 4.

Ah, I see. A little Carolina humor went over my head.

I don't get it. All these schools are well-known academic "powerhouses," why do they need a new distinction as such? Granted some of these schools are small and, perhaps people from Cali don't know much about a school like Colby, but to me, its the same-old college article.

It looks like GU is definitely in the traditional power group, as we show up in the "overlap schools" for 5-6 of the schools on the list, including several that aren't among our top overlap schools (Colgate, Tufts).
