I just checked a couple of books out of the library the other night and the first one I read was Guests of the Ayatollah by Mark Bowden which I highly recommend.
I started reading Fields of Honor by former Park Service historian Ed Bearss and discovered, in the foreword by James McPherson, that Bearss (who served in the USMC) attended GU on the GI Bill post-WWII starting in 1946.
First time I'd ever run across that fact and as a Civil War buff I've seen alot of shows and read a lot of books that Bearss was somehow involved in.

My brother, class of 50, knew Ed very well when he was Park Historian at the Vicksburg Military Park. Was also a very active member of the local Catholic church.

Stopping at Vicksburg on the way home was the only highlight of a trip to Shreveport, LA in 1985 for the Independence Bowl. (Clemson lost to Minnesota in what seemed to be sub-arctic conditions - Holtz had already left for ND and Gutekunst was coaching the bowl game for the Gophers.)
Always have enjoyed reading or seeing programs put on by Bearss - hopefully I'll get to see one in person and meet him someday soon now that I'm in this area.
