The John Carroll Awards are headed to Las Vegas in 2006. Any plans form the host committee to date...or better yet, what would readers want to see as events?

Panel Discussion: "AMDG and 'What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas'--Compatible mottoes?!" Or "The Ratio Studiorum, Spiritual Exercises and Doubling Down on the Soft 17!" Panel experts include JT2, Leo O'Donovan, William Bennett, Ronnie Highsmith and Nevada Hoya.... ;D Sorry, DFW! Couldn't resist!!!

How about Chico too? Well, the committee should be well underway, but I haven't been notified of any meetings recently. We had an affair in the spring to try to gather local support. We were supposed to have a meeting in June. Likely in August or September we will start in earnest. I am sure the people are GU are well underway with their plans, but I am not sure the local committee is on the same page. Throw all your suggestions and I will pass them to the committee. I love YOUR suggestions, WBH. I hope you and DFW will be here for the weekend.

In all seriousness, a panel of local alumni to talk about changes/opportunities in Vegas would be interesting (Ronnie, Chico, Brendan Gaughan, etc.).... I don't know if I can attend JCW in 2006 but it sounds like it will be loads o' fun......

I think part of the theme is to get a good representation of the class of 1968, the majority of whom will be celebrating their 60th bday (hear that, lic, FTB, and hoyagimp); maybe they are hoping Bill Clinton will make it. On my end I hope to interest members of my class to have a west coast 40th reunion (class of 66) for those, who can't make the DC reunion in June. Maybe we can have Brendan take some alumni around the track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

During the student sendoff that the GU Club of Southern Nevada (there is a new club of Northern Nevada now) our west coast rep for GU gave us a little update on the John Carroll weekend. We have a very rough agenda. Two of the items on that agenda are the 60th birthday mini-reunion for the class of 1968. Brian Greenspun, C'68, L'71, and president of the Las Vegas Sun has proposed hosting this mini-reunion at the Green Valley Ranch, which he partly owns. Another proposal, and I don't know how definite this is, was ex-Pres. Bill Clinton giving a seminar. I believe most of the activities will take place at or near the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino (WBH, another incentive for coming out ).

Nothing against the class of 1968, but the JCAW has to become more than a getaway for an increasingly older, easily affluent audience.
Ideally, that weekend could be a destination for Hoyas of all ages (and economic backgrounds) for fun and fellowship, esp. for those out west who are less likely to visit DC. Las Vegas is a great site to do this.
I've made this point, albeit unsuccessfully in the past, that if the JCAW continues to focus on the six figure income folks and the pre-1970 classes, the next generation will have little awareness and even less interest in it going forward.

DFW, I hear you on your points about making the event an all ages type of affair. And, it is happening.
I was at the voting for this 2007 JCAW (to be held in Florida) and one of the main selling points was the organizers commitment to changing the JCAW into just the type of event that you describe. Being class of 2003 undergrad (and now MSB 2008), I am looking forward to the change.

The basketball board has already had a discussion about how looooooooooong it takes to drive from, say, Dallas to El Paso within Texas, but it's no picnic either if I wanted to see about going and it turned out it was in Pensacola. It's not in Pensacola, right? RIGHT??? Also, along the lines of what DFW has proposed, if the JCAW could shift its focus from "six figure income folks and the pre-1970 classes" to "five figure student loan debt folks and the post-2000 classes", that'd be really awesome.

2007 is in Ft. Lauderdale.
As to who past events have targeted, let's put it this way--this year's dinner was $400 a couple, black tie ($250 a couple for young alumni).
I passed.

Nevada,
DFW is right on the money (pardon the pun!). The Missus and I went this year to JCAW in Chicago for the first time only because our "compadre" (the father of our goddaughters) asked us to come.
The dinner was fine (albeit overpriced--to which DFW alluded earlier) and Paul Anthony made way too many corny jokes about alums who graduated long before 1970 (that's my not so tasteful/undiplomatic way of saying that the festivities are too heavily skewed toward that Alum segment).
It's logical that the dinner and gatherings are skewed to this segment since it's no doubt populated with those who give most and most heavily. But the long-term success of the event would be enhanced by involving more profoundly those who are under 55. Just my $.02; please don't take offense....

Perhaps there could be a less-expensive alternative to the JCAW? There is probably some reason and experience involved in shooting for the high rollers, so I wouldn't want to monkey with anything that is working.

I agree with DFW too, even though I am class of '66. As a civil servant, I can't afford the $400 to attend the main dinner (that is why I am trying to help out; maybe they will give me a free pass in ). But I would love to get some of the younger alumni here (especially from this board). Maybe we will have enough events, so that people will not have to feel obligated to go to the main dinner. Not having been to a JCAW I am not sure of the logistics. Of course, I would like to see some of my classmates, and I am trying to convince some of the west coast members of my class to make this a mini-reunion, especially for those who can't make it back to campus for their 40th in June.

I may be in Vegas that weekend, but I can't for the life of me see why I'd go to that dinner, even were it free. At $400, it is an easy choice to skip.
Then again, I'd have to say I don't feel much like I'm part of a Georgetown community. (But I am part of a Hoya Saxa community).

I am trying to get on the hospitality committee. Since they are forming a committee, that might mean having a suite at the Mandalay Bay (like we did with Father O'Donovan, when he visited us). It was a place, where the alumni could come, chat, share some refreshments, get some freebees, etc. Just being able to talk to some of the alums about GU (and I hope a lot about bball) will be worth the weekend, even if I don't get to the dinner. If this is the case, I expect you to be there at the hospitality suite, SF.

LOL, I'd show to meet ya, Nevada...I just have never quite seen myself fitting in at a John Carroll Awards dinner. "Tad! Buffy! How's the yacht! Bill, how's the prostate old boy!"
Maybe I'm exagerrating. (Maybe). What the heck do you do at an awards dinner? I feel like there is this Georgetown Society that goes to these things of which I'm not a part. Like everyone is a freemason or something.
Now if they had timed it with a game versus UNLV, okaaay.

SF, I agree with you completely. At our student sendoff last weekend, I felt out of place. I like the people, but their lifestyle is not mine. One of the guys brought his Rolls Royce, so people were oohing and aahing over it. The other people live in communities that are pretty exclusive. We live across from a house that was involved in a SWAT raid last year. But I will tell you about my prostate, if you ask. I will keep you posted, SF. I would like to meet you and any other board member that comes.
