Definitely a somber mood today on campus in light of this and the death of a student last week, both accidents. Both men, from what I understand, were well liked and good sons of Georgetown. Please keep them and the GU community in your thoughts and prayers.

This is truly a sad time, may we keep Daniel and Bobby in our hearts and prayers. It can be very difficult to understand how such amazing young people can be taken from this world. I'm not very religious but I hope they are at peace wherever they are.

This fire is one of the greatest tragedies in recent Georgetown memory. Unfortunately, it is a disaster that has been a long time coming due to university inaction and the incompetence of the District of Columbia. Many of the houses around Georgetown that are let to students are substandard and they are owned by slumlords. As an undergraduate, I lived in a house (1209 Potomac Street) that had multiple violations, including exposed wiring. We took all of the necessary steps, including contacting the city and GU off-campus affairs (who did nothing more than give us a booklet on how to contact the city). When all was said and done, the city cited our slumlord with egregious violations and gave her 30 days to correct them. None were corrected, except for one. We got a working stove, which was delivered by the very man who had inspected our house. He had been bribed by the landlord and nothing was pursued. Our phone calls to the city were not returned and GU told us to keep contacting the city. Our students "representatives" on the ANC did nothing other than tell us to contact the city. Fortunately, we did not have a disaster, but I hope this very real tragedy causes the university and the city to take note of their deficiencies. I understand that the new campus housing has eased the shortage which forced us into our slum house. I hope, however, that the rabble we're hearing now from the city and GU housing lasts. When we showed GU the egregious violations in our house, they never suggested they might help us find alternative accommodations while the violations were repaired.

Extensive coverage today in The HOYA about the fallout after the accidental death of Dan Rigby and the subsequent fire inspections on Prospect Street and elsewhere. Recommended reading for the latest on these inspections and the legal/political fallout in the town/university community.
