Financial Times published an interesting article in its weekend edition(cover of wknd section) on how Harvard overtook Oxford/Cambridge as the world's premier educational institution. Gtwn actually gets a brief mention by the Harvard admissions director , who was pointing out that Harvard actively tries to solicit the best students, unlike the Briish univ's. The harvard admissions guy mentioned that they travel with GTwn, Penn, Duke etc to visit students.
I thought that the interesting part of the article for Gtwn was that they attributed harvar'd's competition with rivals yale, princeton for students, faculty, etc as part of the reason for its ascendancy. It may seem like an obvious point, but I don't think that a lot of gtwn staff/students/alums realize that gtwn's lack of a real rival(s) that we actually view ourselves as competing with in something other than basketball, has probably significantly limited the univ's development over time. Stressing one's uniqueness and trying to always be unique is not always a good thing.

Is there a link to this story? The whole issue of rivals and "peer institutions" cuts to the heart of Georgetown's various institutional struggles right now.
