I remember the postcards that used to suffice for a roommate selection questionnaire. I also recall how shocked I was when I saw what some of my friends were filling out for other schools.
My best recollection regarding the roommate selection process was hearing from one of the biggest slobs on the floor during orientation that he had indicated neatness to be highly important to him on his questionnaire, because "ain't no way I was going to live in someone else's mess."
Good times, good times.

This must be new this year. I didn't have anything like that before I arrived on the Hilltop last year. There was a little online questionnaire but that was it. Nothing like this with the potential matches and communicating with potential roomates.

Now that I've read a little more of the article I've confirmed that it's a new thing this year. Just wanted to make sure I didn't somehow miss out on that one last year, haha.

I just helped my girlfriend move her younger sister into Stanford as an entering Freshman. My girlfriend's sister knew nothing of her roommate prior to showing up. They keep all information secret, claiming that any information would just cause prejudices ect. But they promised that they would make the best match possible. I'm curious to know how it all works out, because it is a fascinating idea. Not sure if I would feel comfortable, but its interesting.

That is extremely interesting. Before I moved in I had at least received my roomates name and some info like that. We were able to send each other a few emails and stuff like that before actually arriving at school.
It's interesting how the roomate issue varies so much among schools. The Stanford approach seems very peculiar to me, but what do I know, maybe it's good that way.

Stanford's seems like an interesting philosophical approach, but I would imagine it has some practical drawbacks... especially in terms of those summer phone calls or emails about who brings the refrigerator, TV, etc...

That was my question too. I couldn't imagine showing up and not knowing what I was supposed to bring...

Haha, I was actually thinking about that as well. Just about everyone moving into a dorm room at least talks to other person about what they are bringing so that there are no doubles of things and so that no one assumes the other person is bringing something you both need.

The odd part about the process which I had forgotten until my girlfriend reminded me last night, is that they have access to facebook.com or some nonsense. So they see all the kids and their interests with a short bio. And they can browse around and see who is in each dorm, but they don't know who their particular roommate will be. No idea whatsoever. The weird, eery part, is that my girlfriend's sister ended up rooming with the girl she had declared her "favorite" after perusing all the photos, bios, etc. Made me wonder if they were tracking IP address and click rates...hahaha.

That is an extremely strange coincidence, it's really hard to believe that that actually happened. I mean, what are the chances? lol
