First off, Howard was awful. No inside game at all. A very undersized squad. They also need a point guard. In the early stages they picked up the dribble and were trapped into making gokd awful passes, were stripped, or through up hopelss attempts which were swatted below head level. I felt sorry for their coach. Number 4 got hot in the second half and made some nice threes.
Roy was fairly inept in the first half. He has hands of stone. I don't think he will ever be a quallity rebounder. I hope I am wrong, but the reaction and tenacity necessary is just not apparent. He does react to perceived extra hard fouls. I predict it will cost him a technical at some point in the Big East season. He was better in the second half and actually displayed some decent footwork. Again, it will be interesting to see him play against a true center. Howard had nothing to throw at him.
As noted, Green gokt into early foul trouble and had an off night. He did have a couple of highlight moves in the
second half, but he only played a few minutes at a time.
I suspect he might have been a little under the weather.
Cook played pretty well and was the only one hot early to get Gtown going. kWhen Owens finally got in to replace Hibbert, he did well early. However, he hasn't shown any desire to drive to the basket. At least Reed, Bowman, and Cook tried a few drives last night.
Reed looks like he has lost confidence in his shot. All of his attempts were way off. He did OK otherwise though.
Bowman played well and was clearly the most athletic player on the floor. Not even close.
As was mentioned, the game got off to an excrutiatingly slow start. Gtown did not make a 2-point field goal until there were less than 6 minutes left in the half.
kWe simply cannot afford to play like that against quality opponents. Gtown had 4 blocks in the first 3 minutes and still couldn't take command.
This team does have the potential and has shown to be a good shooting club. Due to physical limitations, it will have to prove so to be successful in some of our upcoming games. We are NOT a good defensive rebounding team. This will cost us dearly as time goes on.
At last JTIII let the bench get some playing time. the first contributor was Crawford and he hit his first 2 shots. He plays hqard and made a nice steal for an easy layup off a hard rebound by a Howard player. He did however show his inexperience by committing a host of fouls in short order and actually fouled out of the game in less than 10 minutes of action.
Ross played very well and should see more minutes. Dizzy also played confidently and was in at the end where he was our best ball handler. We must remember that he was playing in garbage time and Howard was not playing any defense at that point.
Guibunda was the last player in with the exception of Izzo. He drained his 2 free throws and although he needs to add muscle, he looked solid and showed he knows how to position himself on offense. Not much of a test to say anything more with certainty.
Howard needs to work on its inbounds play defense. Time and time again, Gtown got easy buckets off throw ins from under their basket. We also had some nice alley oop buckets due to some good passes from us, but also due to the lack of height and athleticism from Howard's frontcourt.
Not a terrible crowd, but with fewer students, no bands--Howard's band is very good--there was little excitement generated.
I don't know what has happened to Wallace's offense, but it was a total no show again last night.
Things will get a lot tougher next week, but the challenge will be interesting to assess.
Let's hope for the best.
