And it looks mighty fine; especially with that huge G in the middle!!! ;D Apologies in advance if this has been posted already! Also, what's up with the street signs/names on campus?!?! Tondorf Drive? West Road? Library Way (or is it Library Walk?)? Who was Tondorf and who was the genius urban planner in the GU admin who decided that on-campus thoroughfares now needed naming?

I don't know who came up with the names, but I know that facilities has been using the names for several years (they probably originated by necessity for fire department/emergency vehicle usage). I think that one of the big drivers for putting up the street signs is that giving directions on campus, which was difficult when I was an undergrad, is even harder now that the Southwest Quad has added an East-West axis to what was very much a campus oriented around one walkway -- the "road" running from Lauinger all the way up to Darnall. Since the opening of the Southwest Quad, there are now a number of new routes for getting to different places on campus, and adding streets might (though not necessarily) make giving directions an easier prospect. Now how long those street signs will stay up on a campus with over six thousand 18-22 year olds is a different story.

I come back on August 23rd. After I finish moving in - I give them 5 minutes before they all reside in Henle 80 along with the East Georgetown sign that warns college students that families live in the houses in the area (thanks for the help guys - my SAT score really precluded me from figuring that one out).

I wanted to steal that sign one night...before I realized I was too drunk to remember where the sign was. I asked some passers-by for help with the location. They didn't know, but they kindly alerted me to the fact that I had a slice of Domino's Pizza in my shirt pocket. Tasty.

Tondorf Road was named for Francis Tondorf S.J., a seismologist at Georgetown in the early years of the 20th century. Some of his seismological equipment is still located under the Healy Building adjacent to what was known as the Center Pub.

Answer: 13, a baker's dozen. Question: How many of those blue and gray signs in Burleith that tell you to "keep it down, you're in a residential neighborhood, enforceable by DoPS and DC Metro" did my roommates and I take? I've got a few extras somewhere if any of you want them. We split the 13 four-ways, I know one of the guys got 4 becuase one was covered in his blood (those zip ties they use are hard to rip off when you're a few beers deep). So I know I got three, one is mine no matter what. I've also got a collection of metal white with red trim and lettering GU no rollerblading, hackey-sacking, or lacrosse signs. That and the fish-eye mirror my roommate ripped down off that little tunnel underneath New North next to Dahlgren

I can only wonder at the state of that seismological equipment after the umpteenth playing of "Shout" or "Rosalita" in the 70s and 80s at what was the once the hallowed Center Pub?! But why was a seismologist at GU when he could have been at an SJ community on the West Coast?!?!? I also should have thought about GERMS/emergency response issues in posting street signs--does make sense. Far more worrying is some of the UMCP-like behavior evinced in some of these posts; gentlemen, please don't tell me the Hilltop best prepared you for a life of pillaging and general vandalism!!

I think I have a few of those "Keep it Down" signs as well. In fact, I think that each of my friends has one. Those signs lasted about 5 days before they were all stolen (or borrowed for an indefinite period of time in my case).

C'mon, WBH, you know no one sacks and pillages like the Twerps. UMCP makes the actual Vandals look like a Victorian doily-and-fine-china crowd. Until some erstwhile Hoya manages to set a pile of stolen signs on fire because a) the Hoyas won, b) the Hoyas lost, c) Wisie's was out of Chicken Madness, or d) simply because it's Tuesday, GU student's will never even hold a candle to the folks in College Park.

OK, you caught me in some rhetorical excess. For the UMCP analogy to hold, GU students would have to ransack one or two of those upscale furniture/design stores on M St. between 34th and 33rd Streets, pull out a couch or other furniture and burn them in the middle of M (not unlike what happened on Rt. 1 in scenic CP). Not likely to happen. BTW, I'm not trying to be a fuddy-duddy/goody-two-shoes (this is the guy who wheeled a keg to Wisconsin and M on the night of the national championship). But wanton destruction/thievery of on-campus property just leads to higher costs for everyone else. Something to recall for students who are coming home in altered states and might be vulnerable to surmise that such foolishness is amusing/entitled....

THAT, fellow posters, is the apotheosis of the rarified acts one must have on one's resume in order to be considered for the vaunted position of Moderator! The gauntlet has been thrown, dear friends - who will answer, and answer with vigor?
I recall participating in some foolishness while at GU, including on M St. when the 'Skins won the SB, but nothing like that.
Returning to the subject, I've always accepted that there would be a background level of mischief/destruction that occurs whenever 1000s of 18-22 year olds are assembled. I agree that we shouldn't condone the wanton destruction/thievery of on-campus property, but perhaps one could excuse the elimination of the 'make nice with the neighborhood' signs (which the University puts up only to appease the ANC, after all) as a form of protest?

Yeah that was our non-violent protest against the tyrrany of the residents, WBH You have to remember, my class got the worst of Gonzalez. We started off with block party, concerts on Copley lawn, other various drinking/partying events... things that really defined, in my opinion, part of the campus experience at G'Town (freshman and sophomore year I had lots of friends visiting - fake ID's in tow - for the block parties). By the time we left, we'd been reduced to those asinine inflatable, bouncing rooms and the worthless Georgetown Day (no offense to those who may have worked it, but it was a poor, poor replacement for the gloriousness of Block Party).

Georgetown Day is what you make of it (aka, I'm trying not to cry about the fact that I never got to experience Block Party). Drinking champagne in the library, drunken badminton on Copley lawn and spiking people's sno cones definately made it a memorable one this year.

Georgetown Day is definitely what you make of it. I don't think I've ever seen Copley Lawn spin that fast.

Well, in the interests of full disclosure and modesty, I wasn't solo/the only one pushing the keg down 37th to Wisconsin and M! But I was the one negotiating with the DC cop along the way who told us he wouldn't do anything to us as long as we weren't offering libations to minors! Hmmm.... How times change, Buffalo. Relations were never great between students and town-gowners in the 80s but I don't think they were as strained as they are now/since the late 90s. Georgetown Day. Cute--a whole 24 hours. In our day, we had Senior WEEK before graduation which was one lame excuse for utter bacchanalia (after reading this sentence, please insert analogy to Simpsons' Grandpa here!!). And don't get me started on the Pub. OTOH, I perceive a lot more institutional consciousness and even research into what has to be the most abused drug of choice by GU students--alcohol. And rightly so, given developments over the last several years.....

My sincere apology for getting back on point, but since the most recent photos are 10 days old, I'm looking for an eye witness update. Anyone been by the field the past day or two?
By the way, if anyone wants to hear about what stunts were pulled by undergrads just up the road in College Park in the late 60's, I can dredge up a few. Back before senility set in, we old guys could cause a little trouble ourselves. ;D

Speaking to LBPops point, I was over on campus yesterday (well, I really went to get an orgasmically good Chicken Madness) and took my digital camera with me. I've got 50+ pics of campus (buildings, interiors, the new field, etc), all with high resolutions. THey all look fantastic. I could obviously send them to whoever wants them, but that would be a bit tedious. Was wondering if the Admin or whomever runs hoyasaxa.com would like me to email the set to them so they could post it somewhere on the web for all to see?
PS - new field looks amazing... can't wait until the WHOLE MSF is finished... in 64 years.

I start a roadtrip on sunday with a stop off in DC - I'll definitely be taking some pictures of the new field - I'll try to get into Harbin or SWQ to get some bird's-eye-view pictures of the turf.
