Lehigh apparently changed their nickname from the Mountain Hawks to the Engineers. Anyone else think that was a horrible choice? I think I remember hearing that Lehigh is a big engineering school, but that sounds absolutely horrible as a nickname. Mountain Hawks was much better in my opinion.

No, Lehigh University changed from the Engineers to the Mountain Hawks, ostensibly to sell more merchandise.
Their alumni still value the Engineers name and so the HS.com web site still calls them that, similar to the St. John's Redmen.

Thanks for the clarification DFW. Without knowing that I thought that Engineers sounded pretty stupid as a nickname.
If the alumni still prefer the original Engineer nickname then its nice to see them go back to their roots, Im sure St. Johns fans would love to see the same thing.
I do know redmen.com (the dot com before the storm, haha) but I wasn't aware of the Lehigh site.

Ok, I get it now. They didn't change their name back to Engineers, they are still the Mountain Hawks much like St. Johns is the Red Storm even though the alumni prefer Redmen.
At first I thought they had returned to the original nickname but I was wrong. I don't understand why they would change to the Mountain Hawks if the alumni prefer Engineers. I can't really see how that would help them sales wise considering that the only people who are really gonna buy Lehigh merchadise are people with some kind of a connection to the university and they would buy it anyway.

... they probably changed the name to appease the title 9 women athletes... you know, Lady Hawks sounds sexier than Lady Engineers...

Engineers has a lot more fans than the Lehigh administration would like to admit, but they seem to be tolerant of it.

I can't believe someone likes the name "Mountain Hawks."
That sounds like something a consulting firm came up with.
They had a distinctive and tradition-laden name and changed it to "Mountain Hawks." Are their new uniforms teal?
That like GU changing from Hoyas to the "River Cats" or something like that.
