Here's one of those low-priority questions to spur some off-season discussion: jerseys.
Some I-AA teams put players' names on the back of jerseys, others not. Georgetown in the latter category. Is it a coaching preference or just the lack of funds to pay for it?

Usually this decision is made by the head coach. It's a philosophical thing that gets to the issue of individual vs. the team. I can't imagine that the cost is a real issue--many high schools put names on jerseys. If I'm not mistaken, Joe Paterno is still a holdout on this issue at Penn State. There's a new cliche' that has evolved: "It's the name on the front of the jersey, not on the back that matters." I'm a new Georgetown football fan, so I don't know the history here.

This thread got me thinking that perhaps GU should consider putting names on the back of jerseys. Personally, I've never been a big fan one way or the other (tho I do tend to give a not of the hat to teams that don't, since they seem to be bucking the trend). However, if you're trying to expand the fan-base, it may be better to have names rather than just numbers. It's easier to remember from week to week that the player who has impressed you the most is named Banks or McArdle, as opposed to #24 or #7. Names make the team a little more accessable, so this may indeed be a good time for GU to go with the flow.

Better than figuring out names on jerseys, let's just make sure the athletic department doesn't sign off on sky blue jerseys in a marketing gimmick.
BTW, I got to see a couple of shots of the Miami Hurricanes' re-designed Nike jerseys for '04. I really liked their retro-yet-futuristic number style, but there's this weird swirl in the new unis that just perplexes me.
Names would be cool, but that is a bit pricey. Plus, I sort of like the old-school-esque feel nameless jerseys have.

Lou Holtz brought it to S.C. when he started there but later abandoned it in moves to placate restless players. He's now doing all sorts of other things to placate players after Black Monday (the firing of 4 coaches and the reassignment of his own son to QB coach from OC) following the 63-17 loss to Clemson in November.
