Not that it'll happen, but... Penn now has an open date on September 18 following the sudden announcement by St. Mary's today that it is dropping football. If Georgetown could somehow reschedule its game at Duquesne for 2006, a game at Franklin Field would be a great opportunity for alumni and fans. The Hoyas are otherwise scheduled to visit Penn in 2007. pennathletics.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/030304aaa.html

That would be an excellent step up for the Hoyas, and given the timing, should be a great candidate for a Hoya Blue road trip. I think Hoya Blue has the ability to rally students together, but they need to show much more initiative and leadership than they have in the past couple of years.

why CAN'T this happen (assuming no complications on the UPenn or the Duquesne side; more likely the latter) ? Benson and Lang ought to be on the phone to Philly saying we'll come walking to Franklin Field if we have to... Penn was ranked #8 in Div.1-AA polls last year and although it would be a very tough game, it would give the program tremendous exposure and be a much needed upgrade from Duquesne (plus not as far to travel)....

Well, for what it's worth, I recall Penn having a last minute scheduling vacancy last year and filling it with Stony Brook or someone similar. While I'd love for the Hoyas to play the Quakers in 2006, it may that Penn would prefer scheduling someone a little easier, and I'd like to think that GU presents more of a challenge than a team out of the NEC (particularly by 2006).

Actually, they picked up a game in 2003 against Duquesne. Penn won, 51-10.

Ah yes, it was the Dukes. My mistake. In any event, there are probably lots of teams that would like a one-time shot at Penn in 2006, even on Franklin field. That alone would likely make GU's chances at getting the game pretty remote no matter what we do (which is what you noted anyway, DFW).

Oh well, Penn was a great idea, but the following appears on their website:
3/9/04
Football Adds San Diego to 2004 Schedule
The University of Pennsylvania football team will be travelling to California next season after all. Six days after having their originally-scheduled season opener against St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. cancelled, the Red and Blue have successfully replaced the game with the University of San Diego. The Quakers will make the program's first trip to the Golden State since 1955 when they travel to San Diego, Calif. to face the Toreros on Sept. 18, 2004. [More]

And to think we (namely I) assumed that Penn would be taking the best offer to play at Franklin Field. Maybe Penn likes the idea of a California trip for recruiting reasons...
