Geezus! relax people. i love the tool threatening legal action! amazing. I agree that threatening legal action is probably a bit much, but I dont think its something to just relax about. The way it was written and phrased it definitely looked like it was about our school, and Im sure a lot of people read it that way. For a school that prides itself on having an excellent reputation both on and off the court, an article making it look like our players were arrested is no joke.

Look on the bright side -- a couple of years ago, we might have worried that Georgetown had become so irrelevant that a paper-pusher at CNNSI.com might not realize that the Georgetown mascot was the Hoyas/ .
This strikes me as a dumb mistake, nothing more.

Someone get George Mitchell on the phone! This journalistic atrocity must be investigated!

Someone get George Mitchell on the phone! This journalistic atrocity must be investigated! Mitchell responds 3 months later with a climactic list of everyone involved with the article (based on anecdotal evidence provided by those willing to step forward, of course), says that everyone is guilty in this issue and recommends that we forgive SI and forget this ever happened.

I'm glad to see that there are others here who don't see this as a big deal. If people make fun of Georgetown for it, first they are stupid, and second the team will take care of things by ramming a loss down their throats. This is not a problem for Georgetown University.

We're talking about unchecked aggression here, Dude. The rug really did tie the room together. I have a subscription to SI expiring in a couple months anyways. Sounds like a perfect excuse to give them for cancelling.

Wow! Lots of current or future plaintiff's attorneys on this thread. When one poster demanded a lawsuit, I explained that there isn't a cause of action in a magazine's mistake like the one here. Not that Georgetown doesn't produce a ton of lawyers, but my explanation comes not from legal experience but from being a journalist. And it's the journalistic error that offends me in the Sports Illustrated headline on the AP story. It's not technically a "typo," as one poster suggested--that's a spelling or keyboard error, at least as journalists use the term. It's rather a failure of knowledge: Georgetown University vs. Georgetown College. And, with the article posted on the "College Hoops" section of the magazine's website, it's a failure of knowledge in a core field in which they work. Ugh. All that said, they reacted quickly and professionally: Changing it probably as soon as someone with authority saw the first emailed complaint. So, no, it's not a big deal. Of course, there's a whole nother class of error introduced by the fact that the computerized advertising widgets on the site read the word "Georgetown" and automatically provide links to items and stories about Georgetown University. But that's another story.

Calm down, everyone. This wasn't intentional.
If you see a report that says Georgetown, you automatically expect the University. If you see an article on the mayor of Paris, you expect France, not Texas. If you're modifying copy, even if you see a reference to Georgetown College, you may still assume it's the one in D.C. and provide a little more info.
It happened, it's fixed, anyone who mocks GU for it will eventually have to deal with their loss to either a) Binghamton or b) Ohio later tonight.
EDIT - Upon reading it over a few more times, I'd have recommended adding a sentence explaining where Georgetown College is. The reference to Kentucky isn't very clear unless you're a total sports geek and know where GC is located.

But that's another story. Thanks for the explanation, I was wondering what bothered you about the article. I thought perhaps you were one of those fancy lawyer types, but that just didn't seem to fit. I'm afraid you lost me on the typo business though. Please expound when you have a chance. That would be terrific! hm

"SI.com is run through CNN."
That explains it. I'm sure they will blame the mistake on Bush.
